I think Escape From Shangri-La is quite an interesting book. The plot is something like this: Cessie tried to help Popsicle to remember his past, but how can she help? She is just 11 years old and she doesn’t even know what happened… The only thing that Popsicle can remember is his family. There are a lot of characters in this story, but the main characters are Popsicle and Cessie. Popsicle is a 65-year-old man; he has a son called Arthur; he has a granddaughter too. His granddaughter’s nam [...]

Always wonder if I can use books by this author with my EFL students as Private Peaceful was such a big hit. This one, about a long lost grandfather/father might be an option, but I'm not sure how interested the kids would be.A very quick read here in Mallorca.

good but not one of his best and a bit boring.

When I started this book I found it so boring but the middle was amazing and exciting, yet it all flopped at the end.The whole concept was really good and the story was too, kind of. The writing was easy to read, but sometimes I found myself reading lines again because they didn't make any sense to me.Popsicle is the cutest grandad ever. His relationship with Cessie is so sweet and although they haven't know each other for very long, they show each other respect and they trust one another.Boating [...]

I never really got into this book, but the story line was enjoyable enough. It gets an extra star for the name of the boat! :)

  • Amina Begum

OAPs young at heart.ch a cute book ;)

  • Meg

I know she's 12, but Cessie is such an annoying character. However, this book provides such a poignant view of Dunkirk that really stays with me.

This is a good read about reconciliation of a father and son and granddaughter and also the blossoming relationship of grandfather or Popsicle as he is affectionately called and his granddaughter Cessie as she tries to help him recall the memories of his passed life in WW2. Not as exciting as the title suggests but it is a very good read. I would highly recommend this book to any school teachers to uses as recommended fiction reading if the class is studying WW2 as it is a good view point and ha [...]

"Escape from Shangri-La" By Michael Morpurgo is a book about a girl named Cessie. After being away from his son (Cassie's dad) since he was a small child, he finally comes back to him. But after falling and getting a stroke, he forgot all his memories from the past. With help from Cessie, they try to make him remember his past. As what usually happens to me at the beginning of a book, I thought was hard to get into at first. My attention was not drawn to it, but I was determined it was a good bo [...]

Everything was normal until a stranger turned up on the doorstep and said he was Cessie’s grandfather. He’s great, until he starts forgetting things and has to go to a nursing home. Cessie misses him a lot, but she still doesn’t understand the mystery of something he kept on saying: “Don’t let me go to Shangri-La, Cessie.” I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while and I got through it pretty quickly. It was a warm and friendly story, about family and love and history, as much [...]

It is a summer holiday and raining steam. There is a little girl, she is 11 years old and her name is Cessie. She loves to watch her mother doing the ironing. At the window she sees a man standing in the road outside, he’s wearing a blue jacket, hair was long and white, he is looking at her when he stands like that. She tells her mom to come and see the man but she is very obsessive with ironing. And then she leant across her and closed the curtains. She smiled her ever so knowing smile at me. [...]

I love this book! I was so excited as I was reading. It was a while by the time I could join the bookcover with the story. Finally watching the cover I I SEE the story! We experience the happinings from Cessie's point of view, which is very interesting mainly she is angry at her parents. I like the way as how Morpurgo tells Cessie's feelings, thoughts. The best part or rather the best moment was when Cessie was waiting for Popsicle to start and Popsicle arrived with a car AND :D I had to laugh a [...]

This book is about Cessie, who is eleven years old and meets her long lost grandfather, Popsicle. No one really seems to like or accept him, but Cessie. He was really sick, and he was depressed. He lost his memory of where he was in the past. He can remember chunks of places and events, and he tries really hard to remember them. I didn't finish the book. I read a couple of chapters and I thought it was really interesting. There were plot twists that come unexpected. I also liked this book a lot [...]

Another great story writen by Michael Morpurgo. When a sudden stranger comes and knocks at Cessie's front door, to her great surprise he tells her he's her grandfather. Her father's father. It was true that her father never talked about his father but now it was time to let him in to the family.Suddenly he is rushed to hospital feeling very ill. He is then taken to a care home. But Cessie wants her grandfather backI really like this book because it makes me feel really excited about what will happ [...]

Another endearing read from Mr. Morpurgo, this is a story that is sure to pull at the heart strings whether you’re 10 or 110. The reader is given a glimpse back to World War II through the eyes and ears of Cessie’s grandfather, Popsicle; a relative that the 12 year old girl has only just discovered. As their relationship and friendship grows it leads them to an adventure, (escaping the awful nursing home he has been put in) to find his wartime lady love. It’s a great read and one that may w [...]

Turned away by his own son, Cassie's long-lost grandfather finds himself in the place he fears most – a nursing home called Shanghai-La. Only Cassie loves him, and she is determined to help him escape and unravel the truth of his past. It’s a past that comes to him only in glimpses – a lifeboat, a tin of condensed milk, and a terrifying night on the beaches of Dunkirk in World War II. Can Cassie and her grandfather put the broken pieces of his life back together again?

While animals play a vital part in many of Michael Morpurgo’s books, this is one without any animal involvement. A young girl’s life is thrown into turmoil as the grandfather she has never met suddenly appears out of nowhere. To make matters worse, he seems to have lost his memory. Will she be able to help him find the missing pieces abut his past and present, when everyone else thinks he is just playing tricks? Another great story!

This was a fantastic book for me it gave me a challenge even though I understood the whole story. It was a great book, because the story had great description and I learned lots of new words. I loved the story as it made you think what is going to happen next and it will make you want you to turn the pages over and over again. I recommend this book to eight to fifth teen year olds as there are few words in there that even some teenagers might not know.

Popsicle has come out of nowhere, out if the blue, to be my grandfather; and nothing and no one would or could ever be the same again.Cessie is determined to help Popsicle to remember his past. But how can she help when he only remembers in glimpses? A tin of condensed milk, a lifeboat, a woman named Lucie Alice, and a devastating night on the beached of Dunkirk during World War II.

This books sounds like it is going to be great and exciting but turned out to be dull and uninteresting all the way through until the last chapter. I'm using this as a guided reading book, but can't see that I'll get much mileage out of it especially if the children found it as boring as I did. Definitely not Michael Morpurgo at his best.

  • Kingfan30

This was a good read although Warhorse is still my favourite (going to go next month to see it :) ). I found this one a bit slow to get going and had no idea where it would end up, once it got going I could not put it down, loved the relationships between the characters.

  • Laura

This sounded like it would be another great book by Michael Morpurgo but I was a little disappointed, it looked like it had potential at the beginning but it was short-lived. It had the tendency to drag and only perked towards the end and that did not last long.

  • Jodie

This is my favourite book about a young person (forgot if it was a boy or a girl) who discovers an old man and they go on a story/adventure. This is just like morpurgo's other books but this brings a heart warming story to the reader even if you are young or old!

  • Jo

Another fantastic story by this wonderful author. Great for most ages. I'll be lending it to my Gran!

  • Nav

Morpurgo takes you on a journey like no other.absolutely fantastic

  • Shannan

I love this. Mostly because the story's told by a girl.

I like michael morpurgos books but i couldnt really grasp the concept of this. It was a really good book- it was written really well but i couldnt understand the plot that well.

  • Heather

Once again Morpugo weaves an excellent tale about beliveable characters.
