Comments Corto Maltese: Les Ethiopiques

  • Alex Sarll

The inscrutable sailor, whom I can only picture being played by Harrison Ford, gets tangled up in the tail end of the Great War in Africa and the Middle East. Here he meets Cush, a local who rivals him both for combat skills and being a bit of an arse. Yet somehow, away from the sea until the last story, Corto feels out of his element - without anything much ever being made of that.

In this volume, Corto Maltese ends up on Ethiopia, fighting against the bad guys with the help of local Bedouins, Abysinnians, and mystic shamans. He meets a cowardly British officer and the Leopard Men of Africa, who count for justice those who prey on the good. Wonderful stories.

Very well drawn, catchy script and exotic atmosphere. I can hardly wait to read the next graphic novel in the series.

  • Vlado Nik

Masterpiece from genius Mr Hugo Pratt.

This is probably my favorite Corto. I just love how pratt made Cush up. Also the few allusions to Rimbaud in it.

Another pleasure to read. I'm glad I took the plunge on this series as they've been a treat.

  • John Bleasdale

Great fun. A brilliant dry adventure with a wonderful hero. I shall be reading more from the Venetian graphic novelist.

  • Javier Martinez

Excellent, reading Corto Maltes is always a special event. This is pretty much everything I love about comics. Pratt's art and writing seems effortless and simple, yet it touches very near to the heart. If superheroes comics are fast food, Corto Maltes feels like eating in three Michelin stars restaurant.

Rereading these stories as they are published in the IDW Euro Comics edition, I realized for the first time how much more violent Ethiopian cycle is. It feels like Pratt caught up with the horrors of the First World War in the way with which the characters kill others with certain ease and without second thoughts. And the number of killed people is way higher than in the previous ones. However, Pratt is also mixing religions with shamanism, adding the prophecies, dreams and the mysterious leopar [...]

3.5 stars. I picked up this graphic novel for an Around-the-World reading challenge (Ethiopia). Since I do not read comics regularly, I had never heard of Corto Maltese, but his character is intriguing and the stories are engaging and effectively conveyed in black and white. I wish I were more familiar with the history of 1918 east Africa to appreciate the details.

  • Devero

  • Celtic

#6 in the series; published by Eurocomics. /list/show/9

    Magnifique.
