My second novel from Kehlmann. Know-nothing art critic Sebastian Zöllner interviews reclusive artist Manuel Kaminski and then accompanies the older man on a road trip to find his lost sweetheart. Zöllner is an amusingly odious narrator, but I found the plot a bit thin. This is a rare case where I would argue the book needs to be 100 pages longer.

A beautiful story. Daniel tells the story of Sebastian Zöllner, an art critic who rushes to write the life story of Manuel Kaminski, an influential, but ailing painter. It is written in first-person perspective, and Daniel uses this mode masterfully to paint the personality of his main character. Thoughts, often shown in indirect speech, tend to reveal how Sebastian views others and how others view him at the same time, just like a cubist painting shows a frontal facial view and its profile sim [...]

James Wood refers to the first-person story-telling as "the unreliable narration" (the unreliable first-person narrator, who knows less about himself than the reader eventually does). Daniel Kehlmann has brilliantly turned the concept into the very framework of Me and Kaminski, except that in the end the protagonist finally catches up (with the reader) and confronts his unkindness, as well as the depth of his self-deception and uselessness - mundus vult decipi finally facing the appalling truth. [...]

Wunderbares Buch.

Think _Pale Fire_, but without the poem; add _Bright Lights, Big City_, but without the cocaine; wrap it up with a hint of redemption, and there you are.Brevity is the great virtue of this book.

The first person narrator of the book, Sebastian Zöllner, is an arts reviewer, who is on his way to meet the famous (fictious) painter Manuel Kaminski to interview him in preparations to write his biography. With his publisher it is already settled, that the book gets published shortly after Kaminski's death - because that's when a biography sells best. Not only arrives Zöllner two days earlier than expected, but he ignorantly invites himself to dinner at the Kaminski home. When Kaminski's daug [...]

I read this in a day and a half. It was quick and funny. The narrator was such a ridiculous a-hole and his interpretations of the events surrounding him were funny. I’m not sure I totally got the intricacies, though, because by the end of road trip, the crazy narrator had actually developed a genuine affection for Kaminsky and I didn’t really notice when that happened. I also didn’t get the ins and outs of who knew what about whom and what secrets were really being kept. Could Kaminsky see [...]

I don't know why lots of reviewers hate the protagonist (one reviewer even went so far he proclaimed him one of the most unlikeable narrators in world literature), I mean he IS a douchebag but so funny and always failing to impress people that it's just too adorable. The old painter Kaminski is also out of this world with his capriciousness. The characters and the overall humorous atmosphere make this novel a real sweet treat in these hot summer days.

A comic romp through the art world in the company of Sebastian Zollner , possibly the most unpleasant narrator in the whole of literature. Great fun Me and Kaminski by Daniel Kehlmann trans Carol Brown Janeway | MadabouttheBookshelannsta/2014/11/30/me-an

He was such an asshole in this book! Amazing writing, and after 3 read books by Kehlmann, I'm allowed to add him as a favourite author! :))

German Sense of HumourYoung Kehlmann's book is from 2003 and it is disappointing compared to his later efforts, like Measuring the World and F. In fact, part of F seems based on it - the brother who takes over the ageing painter's life and work is very much reflected in the plot. In this tale, an inept and ambitious young journalist hopes to make his reputation by writing the biography of a famous elderly painter, only to be frustrated by himself, events and the wily old man.The skill in the wri [...]

  • Akin

The book's merits are overwhelmed by the very thin, very mean characterisation of Zöllner. I can only surmise that a journalist must have been very unpleasant to Kehlmann once.

  • Marie

Me & Kaminski is the third novel by Kehlmann that I have read after reading his two most recent novels first Fame and F (A Novel. The narrator of this is Sebastian Zollner, an art critic and biographer, working on the biography of famous painter Manuel Kaminski, who due to a debilitate eye illness, is now blind and looked after by his daughter Miriam. The novel sees Zollner travel to the remote place where Kaminski is staying.Zollner is a jerk, a real jerk and a chancer freeloading on his no [...]
