This book begins with a murder that occurs in an English boys school and the story is a good one. What I enjoyed most of all however was the humor and compassion that the author obviously feels for his characters, both the school boys and the detectives on the case. Refreshingly the two detectives are normal, happily married and they enjoy their work. We are given the "boys eye view" as well as that of the police and it is clear that the author enjoyed the time he spent as a headmaster. The autho [...]

I enjoyed this book - murders in a boy's boarding school in Ireland. I'm going to read more by this author

I liked this author. For most of the novel, the tone is almost tongue-in-cheeck, as the author brings out humorous, and sweet episodes about boys and their teachers at a residential boys school in Ireland. It gets really gritty when the facts of the murder are finally revealed. I want to read another to see if he holds up.

I'm afraid I gave up on this book on page 49, and I'd been debating continuing before that. I found the style of writing somewhat plodding and laborious, with too much unnecessary detail and not enough action. Sorry, Brother Andrew. Having just looked at the list of his previous books, I think I gave up on The Four Courts Murder too

Murder and kidnapping at an Irish boarding school. Andrew Nugent, a Benedictine monk and former headmaster of Glenstal Abbey*, gets the milieu exactly right in this well-paced, reasonably engaging thriller.*: one of the country's elite boarding schools, reputed to educate the cream of Ireland's youth - the "rich and thick".

I didn't like his writing style at all. Some may find it cute, but I found it annoying and at times downright bad. The author makes liberal use of his thesaurus whenever possible, usually at the expense of the plot. Side note, which didn't affect this review: for a Benedictine monk, this guy comes up with some pretty dark, twisted subject matter.

I'm so delighted to find this author. Nugent is an irish Benedicting monk who spent many years teaching in boys' schools where this mystery is set. he really knows boys and knows how to write a wonderful mystery. I can't wait to read all of his books.

The story was very good. The characters were varied and could have been more interesting had they been fleshed out a bit more. Their personalities were well developed while their feature were fairly vague.

  • Sandi

Set at an Irish boarding school for boys, this was a well done mystery written in a nice straight ahead style that did not sensationalize the horrible crimes contained in the plot. I also liked the working dynamic between the two main characters and how they just got on with the job.

  • Teresa

Although written by a Benedictine monk this tale should not be mistaken for a cozy. It is sometimes graphic and violent.

  • Doug

A police procedural novel that deals with the darkness of the human soul as well as grace. I liked the book.

  • Tony Leather

Neat twist and well crafted, Lovers of this genre may well say they saw it coming, but I enjoyed the book. Well written and kept mu attention
