Since I'm a animal lover, I picked this one up off of the new books cart at the library and read through it during my lunch hour. It can basically be described as the "Dog Whisperer" for kids. The author tells children the right way to approach strange dogs, how to give Rover a treat, and what to do when a dog jumps up on you other things. Never preachy, just told in a fun rhyming scheme that would be perfect for a read-aloud.Great retro-ish illustrations that kids and adults should both enjoy!

Is this ever just the book we have needed for years. I loved the illustrations and what a nice way to talk to kids about approaching dogs. I like how an owner kept telling the kids to stop and how to stand if something happens. Very nice. I can't wait for my next parent looking for a dog book! Librarian to the rescue! Ages 2+

  • Natalie

I'm not an expert on what actually works, but this book gives suggestions on what to do when meeting a new or disagreeable dog. Great to read to kids who lunge towards any unknown animal!

  • Gwen Ayler

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the illustrations, the message and rhymes of this book are PERFECT when teaching children about how to greet new 4-legged friends.

Grade level : Preschool- 2nd grade Genre : picture bookDon't Lick the Dog is a fun picture book with bright and colorful oil painting like illustrations. With a fun rhyme through parts of the book, it tells readers how to treat dogs and how to react to unfriendly dogs . I would like this in my classroom because it is a good way to teach kids how to react to animals. Not every family will have the chance to teach their child, and as a dog lover I would rather kids be comfortable than afraid of do [...]

I'm going to go with three stars for now, but I reserve the right to up this rating once I see if my niece and nephew take this book to heart. My husband and I have a new little dog. He's a small cute dog, the kind owners of "real dogs" refer to as "rats," and as such, my niece and nephew want to shower him with kid-ly affection. Unfortunately, the dog is not as enamored of the loud, strange smelling creatures with fast movements and squeaky voices.Forging a safe, comfortable relationship betwee [...]

Visit us for new picture books reviews daily!Summer Reading Day 69: Our book today was Don’t Lick The Dog: Making Friends With Dogs by Wendy Wahman, an adorable book about having good manners when meeting new canine friends. Told in rhyme, it goes over the etiquette of meeting new dogs: asking the owner first, where and how to pet, etc. We liked this book a lot! Teaching children how to safely approach and interact with strange dogs is [...]

This book has amazing illustrations! They are big, bold, and very colorful. I was defiantly mesmerized by the illustrators creativity and originality as I flipped though every page. The illustrator used a color palette of only 3 or four colors on each page. On one of the pages the colors are black, white, lime green, and hot pink. On another page the colors are black, white, hot pink, and electric blue. The story is fun and informative. It has a rhyming/sing song quality to it that makes it fun [...]

I've gifted both this book and Wahman's other picture book, A Cat Like That, to my niece, who's three. She adores both books, asking her mother to read them to her all the time. Perhaps more importantly, she's taken the lessons in the books and applied them to the way she interacts with other people's pets, respectfully curling her fingers to have a dog sniff her before petting, and always remembering to ask the dog's owner if it's OK first. That's the mark of a highly successful children's book [...]

Another book with great, colorful illustrations! My three year old promptly thought the dogs were alligators, and I had to explain they were all dogs and that they just looked a bit like alligators. But aside from that, the illustrations are awesome! This is a wonderful book for explaining to your little one how to approach strange dogs they meet while out and about. My son usually goes up to animals and tries to hug them like he does his grandparents' cat. Doesn't work that way with strange dogs [...]

A nice introduction on how to behave around dogs, ones you know and don't know. Funny illustrations and quite appealing - I think I have now read it at least 25 times in the past week to my two-year-old. She LOVES it. Update: 3 years later, she still loves and it and actually implements some of the tips and has passed on her love of it to her little sister.

  • Steve H

A short, rhyming picture book that instructs children how to behave when meeting new dogs. If you could have required reading for parents to read to their young kids, this would be on the list. I think quite a few adults could learn a few things to. The wild illustrations are a bonus to the practical message.

  • Katie Dicesare

In this story, author Wendy Wahman tells you how to make friend with a dog using playful rhyming text. On each new two page spread, she offers easy advice for how to get to know a new dog. From holding still and slowing down to how to hold your hand like a plate if you get to offer a canine a treat, the book worked wonders for the kids reluctant around dogs and those over-excited to see them.

  • Kathy

I never had a dog growing up, so I really never learned how to meet a dog. Now with a very old, very blind, very deaf Schnauzer, when kids ask to pet him, I've just said that he's old and crabby and best not. This book, however, is wonderful in very simply describing what to do when you meet a dog. I loved it!

  • Bree

This book will help teach children that you cannot just assume that all dogs are friendly and ready for petting. It shows how to properly walk up to an animal, pet one, feed one and what to do if you are getting ready to leave a dog (especially one that jumps). This may help prevent accidental bites with small children.

  • Kate Hastings

Finally-- a great safety book for children regarding how to approach/act around dogs! Simple advice to help children understand what to do when they meet a cute puppy on the street or at a friend's house.

  • Christina

Gorgeous, vibrant illustrations with equally important and covertly humorous text make this lesson in meeting and greeting strange dogs especially enjoyable. A perfect gift for anyone on your list, adult or child.

  • VegasGal

This is a must read book for children who aren't familar with dogs (even for kids who have dogs and could use a reminder too) and their sometimes "odd" behaviors. It's an important subject and is even told in a funny way to attract and keep a child's interest.

  • Stef

I wish every child could read this book. The proper way to greet and interact with a dog. So many bites could be prevented! This might actually be a cute introduction in the language of dogs for big people too!

  • Paula

Children often don't understand what dogs' actions mean and can misinterpret a threatening signal for a friendly one and vice versa. This humorous how-to manual shows kids the best ways to interact with unfamiliar dogs, providing helpful tips about all sorts of dog behavior.

  • Corinne

The graphics are bright and engaging, while also being slightly abstract-but still very enjoyable to look at. Enjoyed the rhyme and it teaches important lessons on how to approach a new dog. I wish the title was incorporated into the book.

  • Tracy Morton

This was really cute and a good book to read to any child. The book teaches the child how to approach strange dogs and how to read the dogs signs. I thoroughly enjoyed it. A must for a dog storytime.

  • Kim Maddin

I first grabbed this book because of the title. My dog gave my niece a lick and she then licked him back. It is more tips and information for kids on how to treat dogs right and to be gentle than a story.

  • Sarah

I really enjoyed this book! It was a great picture book, and I liked how the author focuses on how to treat new dogs, because it really scares me when I see children who don't know how to act towards dogs they meet on the street.

  • Franki Sibberson

This is really a kind of How-to book teaching kids how to get to know a dog. A quick rhyming story with lots to learn. I like this as a unique model for nonfiction writing.

  • Reta

Great book for teaching early dog manners. Lovely rhymes that aren't forced and easy rhythm.

  • Rita M

    Read to gkids.

  • Michelle

I HATE the art style but it teaches kids how to behave around dogs, which is really important

  • Syntha Green

Perfect for storytime, a great overview for kids on how to greet a dog for the first time and how to behave around them.
