This is a real seinen manga. No cute girls, no romances, just men and women kicking major butt! I love the whole team of the Black Lagoon but mostly, Rock and Levi. They defy all the stereotypes that say that the girl has to be the understanding, empathic one and the boy has to be the protector. Levi is awesome, just the way I like heroines to be!

Apparently I have a _need-to-rate-review shelf from like 8 months ago that, like many of these books, I forgot existed. So we're going to blast through them Mad Max style, in no way giving them the attention I am sure they deserve.I don't remember this at all, so let's go find a copy of this to glance through and jog my memory. I don't see Vol 2 on my 'Read' or 'Want to Read' shelves, which is probably a bad signHmm I kind of remember this. It's about pirates and there's an idiot and a murderous [...]

A very good and entertaining action read. This is the story of the crew of the PT boat the Black Lagoon. They will transport anything anywhere for the right price. Working in Southeast Asia, they face the mob, hitmen, and other assorted folk trying to kill them. The first volume introduces Rock as the new crew member, and one very lethal maid. You'll have to read it to learn more. This had a good pace; it was entertaining, and overall I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the next volume in the [...]

Decent action anime. A lot of manga art looks similar to me and this was no exception, so the art was good. The sexy female in the Daisy Duke shorts made the book. Basically the story of a group of mercenaries on a souped up PT Boat, "The Black Lagoon", and the dangerous missions they undertake. There are several volumes of this series, and it's popular. It's more straightforward than some manga I've read, so it has that going for it. However, this volume didn't impress me enough to seek out oth [...]

This was at least remotely interesting. The artwork was good. Plot was alright, not compelling enough to make me want to continue the series but enough to get through this volume. The characters gave me the impression that I would like them as the series went on, but the plot (which was pretty vanilla anyway) wasn't good enough for me to continue this.

  • Frahorus

  • Robert

I'm a big fan of the television adaptation of this Manga series of books. While I did enjoy this, I think the action can get muddled too easily. The gun battles, fist fights, sea battles, all get confused (at least to me) in this format. I much prefer the moving color action of the screen version, but this is still fun. It would be better if it were larger, drawn better and colored. But, this is manga after all.

  • Erin

Revy= One of my favourite 'heroines', if you will, of all time!!She is killer, smart, sassy and bloodthirsty all of this leads to BADASS!I saw the anime, of the same title, first. Loved the voice acting and the animation. I had to get this, and let me tell you! I will never regret buying this amazing manga. I also love the kinda/sorta underlining romance between Rock and Revy.Filled with violence, great one liners and witty repartee!

  • Jordan

Definitely good, but I prefer the anime because the action scenes just do much better in that format. The huge shoot-outs, barfights, and uh flying torpedo boat just look better on screen. The two are pretty much the same so far, so there's not much extra to be gained from the manga. Black Lagoon is one of my favorite anime series though, so it would be pretty hard to surpass it. I always feel like I should go become a pirate after watching/reading Black Lagoon. If Rock can do it, so can I.

  • Amber

My husband and I watched the anime, and I got him this for Christmas. If you like badass characters and a good dose of the good ol' ultraviolence then check this out. There's a reason B&N sells it in shrink wrap.

  • Jenn (One of Many, We are Legion)

This one I have not read, but have watched the anime. I know, I know, I probably shouldn't rate based on the adaptation, but assuming that the manga is at least as good (but likely better) than the adaptation, this one kicks ass. Super strong women, too. Lots of ass kicking by every character.

  • Trip

It's Hong Kong action cinema in manga form!

  • Apollo Graye

It feels so good to get into this series once again. You guys just don't understand. After I heard it had finally come back off of hiatus (Dear lord please let it continue to serialize)It's not as good as I remember it, honestly But it has been several years since I first read the first few chapters. At least I can honestly say that it does indeed get much better as the series goes on. If you like strong female leads, you'll love this series!

  • Andrew

Loved the anime, and glad that this first volume is just as good, since the show gave me high expectations for the source material! Revy "Two-Hand" is one of my favorite characters!

  • Dbgirl

    Quite harsh overall, but good.

  • Jay

Typical anime with lots of violence. Pretty interesting story with strong violent women.

  • Alexander Engel-Hodgkinson

When he's assigned to deliver a disk with unknown contents across the South China Sea, Rokuro Okajima's life takes a turn for the worst. That morning, it would've probably been a routine business delivery--that afternoon, he finds himself kidnapped by a group of mercenaries in a torpedo boat (couriers who 'sometimes' break the law to put food on the table), attacked (twice) by more mercenaries in a bar and then in an attack helicopter (which is taken care of in one of the most creatively stupid- [...]

Black Lagoon Vol 1 Information:Publisher:shogakugan and viz mediaYear published:2003-2008story and art by:Rei Hiroe My thoughts:Black lagoon, is one series whether it be the manga or anime, that I would recommend to anyone.but since I am doing a review for the manga I would have to say that the art and the action of the book are very well crisp and detailed, which is something that I could picture seeing as a live-action for the story I will admit it started out slightly bland at first but as I [...]

  • Richard Morgan

I think there's something to be said for enjoying pulp. No, it's not a sophisticated existential drama -- it's not trying to be anything high-minded, and it's not trying to be anything more than what it is. And yet, by refusing to presume itself to be anything more than what it is, it ends up becoming something rather special. Yes, it's largely a riff on classic action movies. Yes, the artwork is fantastic, the action is thrilling (and the way Hiroe frames the action only gets better as the mang [...]

Action, action, more action. Shoot outs and boat chases are fun. Not too much to read here, but a lot of detailed drawings to explore. Some action sequences are confusing, requiring a bit of getting used to. I can see how this kind of story would do better in the moving pictures, so to speak. The female lead is indeed kick-ass and unapologetic, which is refreshing; however, she still dresses to please sexual appetites, no doubt. I'm not going to say she should be dressed differently just to prov [...]

  • Vuyisile Sibeko

Black Lagoon is heaven on earth to read as a manga. This is one of the first Manga I had ever read in my early Otaku years and it was one of the best introductions to manga I could have ever had. It's tongue and cheek, gritty and uses smart ideas wrapped tightly in stupid fun. One could easily make the argument that other Manga/Anime have done the same but very few have managed to balance it so well without being annoyingly self referential to the point where you feel like the plot has come to a [...]

  • Carmen

i liked this. The storytelling is a little awkward and it feels like the author is still working his way into the main plot beyond simple loosely linked episodes, but the characters are intriguing. Dutch is brooding and mysterious and a former Vietnam Vet with a lot of baggage, and Revy is, well, psychotic. Hot, but psychotic. We are given hints at her difficult past, but the real tension about her may just be that she's a born sociopath. Roc is every paper pusher bureaucrat who dreams of a life [...]

This manga was recommended to me by a well-meaning student in my Japanese/American noir class, but whoever the audience is for this stuff, it's definitely not me. The most amusing thing to me about these action-heavy stories of couriers-for-hire is the fans who give them credit for breaking down stereotypes. Apparently, in the world of manga, if your buxom heroine in her Daisy Dukes with a terminal case of camel toe is fearless, bloodthirsty, and good with guns, you've made a feminist statement. [...]

I'm pretty selective about the anime series I invest my time and money into. And this is definitely worth both, several times over.I'm not going to review each of these individually, but as a whole, it is worth the five stars. If your a little unsure if you wish to read, check out the anime series or just hangout at the bookstore and begin reading. If your like me, you will be hooked.FYI: This is definitely meant for mature audiences so be aware there is a lot of language, shooting, etcbut I thin [...]

This was a truly wild-action run :) I wont go into details because you need to check it for yourself. I never watched the anime but manga is outstanding. There are goofy details in (as I have seen in majority of manga) but entire story, characters they feel like combination of stuff from various old-style action movies ("Wild Bunch", "Assault on Precinct 13", "Escape from New York", "Reservoir Dogs" and likes).Highly recommended.
