What can free the heart? The bible does two things: It announces what God has done, and it confronts its hearers with this news and its implications. For a follower of Christ, the word of God must be valued. In our churches today and with good intentions, it is the good music or the terrific programs that bring the masses to church. The networking that is found in corporations is now found in our churches. Good intentions do not change hearts. It is the word of God. The book in three parts share [...]

Some good reminders, but generally unimpressive. I don't see what all those endorsers on the cover were saying -- it's not groundbreaking, it's not penetrating, it's not revolutionary. Sure, it would be useful for churches and pastors who have gotten off-track, I suppose, but most of the stuff seemed rather obvious to me. I'm sure there are better Christian books on the Word out there.I received a free copy of this book while at Book Expo America in New York City in summer 2017.

Jonathon Leeman’s new book Word-Centered Church responds to the truth of the Bible's power with a pressing and practical question:If the Bible is so powerful, so important, so “sola” set apart, what place ought it have in our churches? This isn’t a new question for church leaders, worship directors, Sunday school teachers, or any one of us believers participating in the life of the local church. But Leeman asks and answers the question directly.Word-Centered Church deals with common dilem [...]

I am very impressed with this book. I think Leeman has definitely identified a serious issue with the church in America. We give lip service to the importance of God's Word but do we really believe that it is the most powerful force in the universe? Do we really believe that it needs to be central to our church life and ministry? Do we think the latest program will get people involved in ministry? Leeman says it is the transforming Word of God that will get people to surrender their lives and yi [...]

Jonathan Leeman's Word Centered Church: How Scripture Brings Life and Growth to God's People is simultaneously an exciting book -- and a frustrating book.First, my frustration. I wish the place Leeman gives to the importance of Scripture he gave, instead, to Jesus Christ. I don't believe in the Bible -- as shocking as that statement may sound. I do believe in Jesus Christ, known through the testimony of Scripture. But I think that's an important distinction Leeman fails to make in this book. So, [...]

I was drawn to Word Centered Church (2017) by Jonathan Leeman for a few reasons. First, the book is a product of 9Marks, an organization committed to what they describe as the 9 marks of a healthy church (preaching, biblical theology, The Gospel, conversion, evangelism, membership, discipline, discipleship, leadership). Last year, they put out an excellent journal about Authority. Second, in a world that has 10,000 ideas about what constitutes Christianity, a book titled "Word Centered Church" b [...]

God speaks through his Word, so shouldn't the Word be at the center of our churches? Leeman's ideas aren't new at all, in fact, they are quite old. May more churches and pastors go back to the basics: Sing the Word. Pray the Word. Preach the Word. See the Word. After all, "God's Word is the most powerful force in the universe".I'd highly recommend this book. Leeman is humble in his assertions, and tells many short anecdotes of life in his own congregation that are encouraging. The section on con [...]

Simple and straightforward book that offers a powerful and important reminder; God’s Word alone has the power to save and transform. Based on this foundational truth, Leeman spends the majority of the book showing how the church should trust and depend on God’s Word in every aspect of ministry and church life. The church preaches the Word, sings the Word, prays the Word, disciples with the Word, and shares the Word to the world. Good book!

Here's the thesis of the book: God acts through his word. This declared word brings life to God's people and the Church. Therefore, when churches gather they should gather around the Word formally and functionally. The Church should center it's very life on the word in its preaching, organization, singing, praying, and discipleship. The word then reverberates through every part of the church into the world where God continues to create his church through his powerful Word.Good book with a few ne [...]

Leeman's work has largely involved considering what makes a healthy church. His latest (which might revisit previous writing) is ostensibly a church growth argument, but it's more than that, as Leeman states that "God's Word is the most powerful force in the universe."The book implicitly answers the contemporary movement that people -- especially young people -- are more interested in actions than in words, that sermons are too long, etc. Leeman addresses these concerns, but wants to maintain fo [...]
