Comments A Band of Babies

One woman watches 7 babies and lets them pillage and trash a local grocery store.

  • Mary Dewley

The illustrations are like an orange crayon mess that blurs all together. Kids might like the rhyming and being able to sound out the action words. Disturbing to see babies out of control and eating food that is unrealistic for their age. I was very unsettled by this book.

  • Becky

First sentence: Play-group morning. Babies fret--not sure what to do just yet. In struts Benny--new in town. Babies' frowns turn upside down. Premise/plot: Benny is the pied piper, a trouble maker. Don't be deceived by his seeming innocence. Don't think his musical band charming. His plan: hypnotize the one adult watching all of the babies, escape from the daycare with all of the babies, and do as much damage possible to a local grocery store. I don't know WHAT Benny did to the woman in charge o [...]

The perfect book for little ones - great rhythmic text and fun illustrations that embrace diversity. I wish I'd had this when I was teaching Head Start and Kindergartenjust read the book, help the kids make their own simple instruments, and strike up the band!I highly recommend this for every nursery, preschool, and daycare center's definitely a 'read-it-to-me-again' story!

  • Penny Klostermann

An absolutely wonderful book! The musical, rhyming text is perfect for this band of babies at play. The illustrations are adorable. This is one to share often.

  • Terry Pierce

A fun read for toddlers and parents. The very young will enjoy following the band of babies as they progress through the story, listening to the rhythmic text and seeing the delightful illustrations.

  • Kate

Lovely book to share with children. It's beautifully written. The characters are wonderfully portrayed. I wish stories like this were around when I was a child.

  • Janet

Benny is new to the baby play group and he does lots to make the group come alive. After forming the band the babies are off to parade to the grocery. And after lots of activity what do babies do, they have a nap. The book has a rhyming text and multicultural illustrations.

A BAND OF BABIES offers a rhythmic tale about a group of nursery children who follow a charismatic young child named Benny as he leads them on an adventure beginning with a marching band. He leads them to the local grocer where they create quite the commotion. Spilled fruit, unraveled rolls of toilet paper, giggles and more before Benny leads them all safely to the nursery for a nap. The verse is clever and at first, I worried about these unsupervised toddlers, but the pastel illustrations sh [...]

This band of babies will charm you from the first spread to the last — and create a little mayhem in between. Carole Gerber has written a lively and humorous story for toddlers. Her rhyming and minimal text flows nicely and mimics toddler gibberish!  Babies hungry, want to eat. / “Walk!” says Benny. / “Find a treat.” She also uses a lot of fun words and sounds, that give Jane Dyer’s joyful color-pencil illustrations time to deliver their funny response.  The facial expre [...]

The rhyme and rhythm of the story were fine. The illustrations were soft and pretty, but seem a little too pastel for a story about babies terrorizing a town.Which brings me to the storyline. Babies/toddlers are allowed to randomly leave their daycare and go to a grocery store where they make a mess, eat a bunch of food, and the store owner is left to deal with the clean-up and monetary losses.

  • James Potts

Very cute for young readers. I would not recommend this book for children over the age of three. It follows around children in what looks to be a daycare setting. They all come together and make a band. One thing I did really like about this book was the different races. A young child would not be able to tell but there are many different races in this book. They all come together and have fun playing in their baby band.

  • Jason Gallaher

This is such a delightful take on making friends and discovering the world together as little ones. Gerber's text makes the whole world seem like a playground, and Dyer's illustrations bring that to life with such vibrancy.

  • Erin

Babies gone wild, rampaging through playtime, a store (? how on earth did they get there?), and finally naptime. The illustrations are almost too soft and gentle for the loud rhythm that is the story.

  • Samantha

A lively day at daycare has the babies playing music in a parade to the grocery store where delicious treats are consumed and then the babies get ready for a nap. Rhyming text makes for a fun read aloud with Babies, Toddlers, and PreK.Colored pencil artwork.

After we read it my two year old said, "I don't like this book." I agree. Something about it just didn't work for us.

  • Kimberly

A band of blurry babies terrorize their neighborhood grocery store. I'm not sure how else to describe this book.

  • Elisabeth

SO weird. I do not understand the narrative choices at all!

  • Joan Marie

A rhythmic, fun read aloud for toddlers.

  • Donna Mork

Babies a bored until new kid shows up. He leads the band around making noise. Then they hit the store for a snack. Eat and drink lots, then they get tired. All babies are asleep, even the new kid.

  • Jacki

Thin as floss. Some babies have a playdate, then go on a rampage through town, and finally have a nap. I have no issue with the plot, but the presentation needed more depth.

  • Mary Lee

Why does the loud trouble-maker baby have to be an African American boy?

  • Mary Librarian

A cute book about babies playing different instruments. Text for the most part is good for a toddler but the illustrations seem a little pale/fuzzy to spark the excitement of this age group.

  • Kathy Temean

Told in rhyme, the fun text and the gorgeous illustrations make you want to turn the pages and follow the babies through out their day at Day Care. You and your child will enjoy their time with this diverse band of babies. Definitely, a book you will want to read over and over again.

  • Sara Grochowski

Love the illustration by Jane Dyer, but I'm not a fan of the actual text/story.
