Max Weber Tracy B. Strong Rodney Livingstone DavidOwen

Arabic Maximilian Carl Emil Weber was a German lawyer, politician, historian, sociologist and political economist, who profoundly influenced social theory and the remit of sociology itself His major works dealt with the rationalization, bureaucratization and disenchantment associated with the rise of capitalism Weber was, along with his associate Georg Simmel, a central figure in the establishment of methodological antipositivism presenting sociology as a non empirical field which must study social action through resolutely subjective means.

Since I've had to write an essay about it I'll admit I'm too lazy to write a proper review !I'll just say a few things :- you may be familiar with Weber's theories on Politics, but his insight on science is as fascinating. It is quite philosophical and very interesting historically speaking as well. Of course this is also true for "Politiks als Beruf" but I personally knew what to expect on this second part.- Forget that Weber is trying to convince you that scientists and politicians are nothing [...]

Max Weber's talks on the vocation of the scientist (wissenschaft) are fascinating and enlightening. While originally delivered in 1917, these talks are still as relevant as ever. Weber's description of the American vs. German university system offers implicit answers to today's debates over labor unions for graduate students, for example, and his insistence that science cannot answer Tolstoy's famous questions about the meaning of life responds well to those who practice scientism instead of tru [...]

Contrary to my 4-star review, I didn't actually "really like" these lectures. However, I can see how valuable they are in that Weber applies a diverse array of theoretical ethics to past and current (in his time) political circumstances. The book is relatively dry in comparison to other major political theorists, however, Weber's supreme intellect was readily apparent throughout; making the read far more complex, driving the quality up. Overall, I don't know that I'd recommend this to any of my [...]

This is really an important, pioneering, condensed essay, which is still very relevant today. It is called a classical, not in vain.

The 'vocations' that Max Weber chooses to discuss in these lectures are equally important but for different reasons. He defines 'politics' as "a means of striving to share power or striving to influence the distribution of power, either among states or among groups within a state." Politics satisfies an appetite for power, which almost too often yields vanity -- an occupational hazard in academic and social circles. Weber, as the token sociologist and founder of the field, critically and truthfu [...]

In rest nada.

  • Katie

I enjoyed this book more than The Communist Manifesto and thought it had some interesting points. Well written, but I think it falls into the category of not being specific enough. If the theories were more in-depth, I think it would have been stronger.

  • Kara

I actually was given a copy of "Politics as a Vocation" that doesn't include "Science", so technically I've only read half of this book. What I did read, however, was excellent. Weber's thoughts on politics and power changed the way I think about modern history and current events.

Weber, so simple, but revolutionary! <3definitely, he's one of the best of his timeMax weber, tan simples, mas revolucionario!

Providing an influential account of modern politics, power, leadership, and the role of the state, the essay “Politics as a Vocation” is a defining text in the field of political science; a greatly influential work on politics, power, the state, and political rule.

  • Alex Kartelias

Probably the only politics and sociology book I've read which I enjoyed and learned interesting things about.

  • Alexandra Sundarsingh

Dense. Complex. Difficult. Excellent food for thought.

  • Melissa

Considering how long ago this book was written, it's surprising how actual some of the concerns are. I thought it was a good read considering it was a school obligation.
