Awwwww this was everything y'all. You couldn't not love Corey. I liked how subtle his Asperger's was handled. I mean you knew he had it and it was obvious in his characterization. But it never felt heavy handed or like I was being beaten do death with it. It also didn't have that totally teachy trying too hard thing many MCs on the spectrum usually are saddled with by overreaching authors. Angel was awesome. And sweet with Corey in a way that really made this so so Sweet haha. It was fun. I'd r [...]

Boy Banned by RJ Scott takes to the behind the scenes world of reality shows and singing competitions. Angel and Corey are two of five contestants who are given a second chance at staying in the contest, but there's a catch: they must stay together as a group. Corey and Angel are the most skeptical that being in a group seeing as they are all so different but there's also the added attraction they feel for each other that could pose a problem. This past couple of weeks I've been making it a poin [...]

4.5 starsThis book was not on my radar but it ended up being a nice surprise with a beautiful and feel-good love story. Instead of being dropped from the show, five solo contenders at Sing UK (including Corey and Angel) are given the choice of grouping together as one of the band contenders. Normally this concept might scare me away -- I'm not big on singing competitions/reality TV -- but I gave this a try and found that the backdrop actually worked quite well.Corey, the sexy rock god of the gro [...]

RJ Scott is a very talented author and this latest book Boy Banned really takes the cake. Now, I have to say, the way this band comes to be reminded me a lot of how One Direction was created. Each on their own didn’t work but when these five guys are put together by the judges, they make beautiful music. Of course that’s where the similarities end.Corey… I want to talk about this character. He’s on the spectrum and likely because of that I became attached to him. My son is autistic so na [...]

‘Boy Banned’ is a remarkable novel for many reasons. First in my mind are the characters, mainly Corey and Angel, but all the major and minor secondary characters as well. Second is the suspense in the plot, not just around who will win the competition, but all the psychology and interpersonal goings-on during the way there. Third, and this is a big one as well, RJ Scott has managed to capture the modern-day phenomenon of reality TV shows perfectly. The behind-the-scenes machinations, the ar [...]

Given that I put hundreds of reviews up each year, I never know why this would be singled out as unpublishable.)Five young men have all crashed and burned at the beginning of a massive British singing competition called Sing UK! While at the start of Boy Banned, it is hard to see how things could develop between Corey andwell, anyone reallybut by the time I was done, I couldn't imagine him ending up with anyone but Angel.Confession-I've never read any book with a character on the autism spectrum, and as far as I'm aware, I don't personally know anyone on it either. So, everything I know I've learned from the news and internet. Here in Boy Banned, Corey makes things very real, and his character gives unique insight that [...]

This is a love story between 2 guys that both want the same thing. Angel and Corey both want to be singers and compete on a TV talent show. They don't make the cut but get a chance to start a band with 3 other guys. Things are rockey for the group at first but they get it together. Corey has aspergers and he tries coup with all the drama around him. Angel grounds him and helps him make it through. They start a relationship but have to stop because the show found out. Corey has to act straight an [...]

This was a fascinating and interesting look into a subject most authors wouldn't tackle. While I personally don't have first-hand knowledge of what being on the spectrum or having a family member or loved one on the spectrum, the way things happened and were handled seemed realistic. I loved all the guys, but how can you not have a soft spot in your heart for Corey and absolutely not adore Angel? The main characters are fabulous and fierce. The secondary are interesting without taking over the s [...]

  • The Novel Approach Reviews

RJ Scott is always a sure-bet author for me when I’m looking for a romance novel I can really sink my whole heart into, and boy oh boy, is Boy Banned that book.It doesn’t take long after meeting Corey Dixon to realize that he’s on the Autism spectrum. You also don’t have to know RJ Scott to know that she’s writing from a place of intimate knowledge because for every moment that Corey is on-page, he’s given an accurate, loving and sensitive portrayal—but best of all, there is an inn [...]

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCEI hesitated with reading this one as Asperger was a word that entered our family when my youngest brother was in his early teens. I remember the worry, I remember the frustration and I remember the anger with the medical profession who threw this word out there and expected us to go off on our merry way. I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be to read but I did feel it would be accurate given what it means to the author and boy did she do a fantastic job with it [...]

Original Blog Post: Review, Excerpt & #Giveaway: Boy Banned by RJ ScottReview by: multitaskingmommaMy Rating: (5 of 5 Stars) 5The Multiplier Rating Takes EffectThere is something truly beautiful with this latest from RJ Scott. Not only is there such an intimate feel to the writing, the characterization of Corey was brilliantly done, I couldn't ask for anything more. In the course of this reading, I could not get out of it, no amount of distraction was enough to lure me out of this world.Mind [...]

A wonderful and touching story by RJ Scott.Boy Banned is a wonderfully different story from RJ’s usual books. One of the MCs (main characters) is “on the autistic spectrum.” If you don’t know it already, RJ’s son has autism. She’s written a very touching and personal Author’s Note at the end of this book.Boy Banned is about a group of 5 singers who didn’t make the final cut on a fictional X-Factor type show. They are given one more chance to make the show if they are willing to b [...]

I received a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked ReadsBook starts at the Singer UK tv show with Corey & Angel both awaiting their fates. They've been watching each other from afar throughout the competition but being competitors for the same title, Corey kept his distance. When things take a turn and the two are thrown together to form a boy band or go home, they start to let their dreams and attractions to each other bloom. Corey is an interesting character, he is out as far as [...]

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~I was very interested to see how the singing contest part of the story played out (rather than the romance) and I felt that it is written with great wit, and probably very near to the truth! I liked that dimension, and the impact of being in the public eye.Although the story is about Angel and Corey, the rest of their band mates prove to be good sorts and supportive in the extreme. When such a disparate group is brought [...]

This moves away from the usual RJ book, but it's no less brilliant for it. I loved the innocent but actually evil judge, but hate what she made the MC's do. The character Corey is near and dear to me since my child has the same diagnosis and has many of the same issues and struggles. Rj wrote the character perfect in light of all the different types of signs that can affect people on the spectrum. The fact that this was a personal issue for RJ as well and yet she wrote it anyway, shows just how [...]

I just adored this book. From the first page I was captured. It's a wonderfully written romance that touches your heart in so many ways. The secondary characters were all appealing, the plot was brisk and never really lagged. The leading men were made for each other and their intimate moments were portrayed perfectly for them. The backstage shenanigans on the show felt incredibly real. I'll certainly be looking for more books from Ms. Scott! I fell in love with Corey and Angel and I think you wi [...]

Stunningly goodWithout a shadow of a doubt, this is the best book RJ Scott has written so far. Its been a long time since I stayed up all night reading because I just couldn't stop myself, but Boy Banned is that sort of book. The author must have done an amazing level of research for this, and it showed. The characters, the plot, the details, the pacing Everything about this book was perfect and I loved it. The author should feel justifiably very proud of herself.

DNF @ 85%. I've had enough. This felt too fake, too contrived, too melodramatic. The ONLY 2 things I liked about this book were Corey and Angel (they were absolutely wonderful and wow, the sparks between these two), but sadly not even they could carry this book on their shoulders. I'm done. Peace out.

I started reading this book at night, and that was my first mistake! STOP!!!! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT OPENING THIS BOOK at least, not until you can sit down and read it without interruption because, trust me, you will NOT want to be disturbed until you've finished it! Like I said, I started it at night and read until I couldn't read anymore. I reluctantly put it down, only to dream about the story and the characters all night. I couldn't wait to continue the next day, but life got in the way, mak [...]

Now, let me preface this review with the fact that I have never seen an episode of The X-Factor, The Voice or any other talent show for that matter. I've seen clips of the shows, but I have never watched an entire episode from week to week as it were. But for this book, it didn't matter that I hadn't seen any of that. Take a character with any sort of dream and it will speak to the reader, even if it isn't a dream the character and reader share. We all have hopes and dreams, doubts and fears, it' [...]

Read the full review on Bookaholics Not-So-Anonymous.Note: This ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.I quite liked this light read! Part of the premise reminds me of how one famous boy band who was also part of a talent show was formed, but other than that, everything else about the story was a creative take on two young men trying to go after their dreams and dealing with the highs and lows and everything else that comes in between. With Corey being on the autism spec [...]

4 – 4.5 StarsThis was such a sweet and touching story, one of those books that just goes straight to the heart!Boy Banned goes behind the scenes of a signing competition show, focusing on two contestants Angel and Corey. They both entered the competition as individual artists but after they and 3 others fail to make the final cut, producers put them together as a band. Angel desperately wants to make his own choices in life and not work for his family, Corey just wants to sing. Together they a [...]

4.50 / 5 StarsI only know a handful of music-band books and this is definitely one of my favorite ones.I loved that the characters were unique, each one of them with their own quirks and flaws, they grow up a bit throughout the story and make things more interesting. All the guys are put together to form a boy band after they didn't do their best performances individually in the Singer UK show. Corey, who is on the autistic spectrum, is deeply attracted to Angel since the moment he laid eyes upon [...]

  • Joyfully Jay

A Joyfully Jay review. 5 starsAs the mother of a son on the spectrum, I really identified with this story and Corey’s struggles. Though every person with an ASD diagnosis is individual with their own set of needs and idiosyncrasies, R.J. Scott has clearly thought carefully about Corey’s portrayal to ensure her reader emotionally connects with him. Although I am aware of Scott’s family situation, there are readers who won’t be and the author’s note at the end of the novel is particularl [...]

This is a fabulous story of 5 young men that dreams were shattered of being in the finals of the Sing show, yet given another chance as a band. All 5 are different as night and day, especially Angel and Corey. Angel needed to win to break away fro his family, Corey had his own reasons as did all the others. Angel is openly gay and his appearances stereotypes him with the skinny white jeans , flowing white shirts bleached white hair and dark eyeliner. Corey is his polar opposite, dark and broodin [...]

As always I was thrilled to read a book by RJ Scott, when I read the synopsis I was even happier. As a healthcare professional, I am always happy when the lead characters aren't hunky, hot, "normal" guys. I found the characters of Corey and Angel easy to root for and rest of the guys in the band as well. Overall, I learned some things and really enjoyed the love story.I have received an ARC from the author
