Excellent holiday storyThis Gothic romance has it all: spooky setting, adorable children, attractive governess, hot dad, second chance romance, mystery, and a suspenseful countdown to Christmas. With atmospheric writing, interesting and intelligent characters, and novella length, it is a perfect period read for the busy holiday season.

3-3.5 starsQuirky short holiday tale with a unique mix of elements. There's romance, a historical gothic setting, a ghost, past misunderstandings in love, need I go on? Enjoyed this one for the most part with the exception of a few things I thought a bit far fetched for characters to do in that time period. Features include a widowed governess (but young & beautiful), a titled widower father, a family curse and mysterious jewels. A few steamy scenes are included.

    Delightful.

I saw this book in a review from one of the people I follow, and bought it off (kindle) for 99cents and yes, it was a bargain too! What a delight of a short book! I kept wondering how I had never heard of this Regency author before but after browsing on her bibliography, I found that she isn't an older Signet Traditional Regency writer. Too bad. This book reads just like one of those older gems. A tad racy, but not to the point of modern regencies. It was such a cute story! Written from the vie [...]

A woman arrives to be a governess to a set of twins. She finds their father is her first love who she thinks deserted her in her time of need. She wants to leave but as she has no money she agrees to stay for awhile. She also finds the children delightful.

I first read this story when it came out as part of Captivated by His Kiss Box Set A second chance story. I’m even going to call it a Gothic story with a comic relief, that of being a ghost. I don’t know if the ghost is supposed to be funny but there are a couple of instances that it actually makes me laugh out loud. Widowed Mrs. Edwina White seeks work as a governess in a house that is in shambles, haunted by a ghost, under a curse, and what’s worst, her new employer is the only man she [...]

This was my first attempt at reading anything by Barbara Monajem, however it will certainly not be my last! I thoroughly enjoyed this story - everything seemed very well thought-out and executed. From the main characters, to the "ghost" herself - this story was told in such a way that it was easy to believe in the curse. I loved seeing how the characters interacted with each other (especially Richard and Edwina who were almost married at one point, but due to a misunderstanding did not - and sub [...]

This story is about the revival of trust, the renewal of love.It was also a ghost story. But fate or the miracle of Christmas sent an old flame to his house seeking employment and they rediscovered one another. Oh, what a delightful slightly gothic regency novella! I loved every minute of it. Poor Edwina and Richard were torn apart as young lovers by deceit and now have a chance at second love. Richard's children, John and Lizzie, are so much fun and my heart was crying for poor John and the Ballister curse on the first born son. Still, the ending is heart-warming and I got my HEA just in time for Christmas.Really, really cute story worth reading!

Read as part of an anthology, I really enjoyed this story. Edwina a Richard were planning to elope when he is thrown into debtors prision. Believing he only wanted to marry her for her money, Edwina spurns Richard and marries another suitor. 12 years their paths cross again when Edwina arrives on Richard's doorstep, an impoverished governess. Fate brought them back together, but it takes a ghost, a curse, and two adorable children to help them fall in love again.

What a beautiful story for Christmas! It has everything I like in a story - a wounded bitter hero with a heart of gold, a strong and clever heroine, loveable side characters in a historically sound and nicely painted background with surprises and heartache and hope and more than just romance but lots of it too I can really recommend this book, I couldn't put it down and the end is so very fitting!

  • Laura

Cute short story. It was a little too much like a bodice ripper for me though. I'm a tried and true mystery reader. The mystery (ghost story) in this was good enough that I didn't need the added sexy stuff. It was free on Kindle though, and I do enjoy a Christmas Gothic story, so I gave it 3 stars. It was worth the read!

  • Sharon Grim

An enjoyable readA fast paced story well written with children in need of a mother and a devoted father trying to save his family. Anyone with a first love gone wrong will appreciate the chance for this couple to have a happy ending. Thank you Ms. Monajem for sharing.
