    Brilliantly done

  • Richard Thompson

Four people are killed in a fancy Moscow Hotel during the Moscow Film Festival, and Rostnikov and his crew realize that the deaths are linked to a terrorist group that the KGB have had their eyes on. Rostnikov is given the job of tracking down the terrorists but he knows that he will be the fall guy if things go wrong.Good characters, but a couple of wonky plot points and somewhat unsatisfying ending (which one kind of expects given the Russian setting). This was book #49 on our 2017 Read-alouds [...]

I will read everything written by this author

This is the second in a series of novels by Stuart Kaminsky about Chief Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov, a policeman and senior investigator in Moscow. It concerns him, his family and his team investigating crimes within the Soviet Union. Much is political within his world and this is a story of terrorists. I have read a number of these and this one leaves much unexplained. Nevertheless, it is an interesting read and his characters are likable.

Another good book in the series, with lots of depth, in my opinion. There's a police investigation, along with politics and KGB meddling in the background, and the usual rich character interactions along with a mix of Russian philosophy. In other words, a typical Inspector Rostnikov story.I think it may take a little work getting used to this series. This one was easier for me to follow than the first one; I think I knew more what to watch out for, and I got to know the characters better.

  • Randal

I had actually read another book in this series several years ago. Despite the lag, coming back to Porfiry Rostnikov and his little band of misfit Moscow policemen felt like catching up with an old friend. It's an easy read pretty standard stuff in the police procedural / thriller genre, featuring an odd but likable cast of characters.

  • Ric

Interesting story, moves along well, I had to do some map reading so I could follow some of the movements. Should read these books in series order. Excellent reading.

  • John Gilchrist

    rostikov multiple people getting poisoned

  • Laura

Chief Inspector Rostnikov hunt for a dark-eyed woman of mystery in Moscow.

  • Guna

I really like all the Rostnikov novels - Porfiry Rostnikov is a weightlifting detective in present-day Moscow. I think these are the best of Kaminsky's works.
