Genre: Epic historical (I would not classify the book as Speculative or YA)Worldview: ChristianPros: The historical realism with Arabian trade routes and the conflict between Islam and Christianity was enthralling. So were the characters. The description and writing was solid and sometimes beautiful. Kudos to the author for using historic and cultural phrases and incorporating so many different cultures into the story.Cons: I would not classify the story as speculative fiction or YA. While the p [...]

This book is well-written, starting the story of Kryin with her mother and the danger that follows. I'd not read from this author before and I have to say she has a unique way of writing that I found interesting. I did find it a little hard to get into, but none the less, the book was good and an intriguing tale of Kryin and the people she meets along the way of her journey. The story itself has many twists and turns focusing more on the Master of all things in regards to Kryin's beliefs, but gl [...]

PlotWhat plot? There is no plot. Usually, a plot goes like this: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Denouement. Here? You don’t get any of that. Kyrin is kidnapped by Ali’s ship in the beginning of the story and then is taken to his house and stays there for a while. There’s no rising action, or climax, or anything. This is not a slow plot, it’s the absence of one.CharactersThe lack of plot could be forgiven if some kind of character study focused on character developm [...]

Falcon Heart by Azalea Dabill stands unique as a mix of medieval, romance, history, fantasy, and mystery with a strong Christian undercurrent. Written in flowing, fast-paced, poetic prose, it transports the reader to another place and time, rich in description and visual images. While very much a new genre to me, Ms. Dabill has done an amazing job of creating a story world that wraps the reader in its spell. For young adult readers on up, if you are intrigued by the timely themes of Christian vs [...]

Falcon Heart is a good medieval tale. The characters are well rounded and complex and the author crafted her storyworld wonderfully. I also loved the addition of taekwondo. Until now, I have never seen that in a medieval fiction novel before, and it will be fun to see where the author takes the characters with it. The only things that I didn't really care for were the occasional slightly confusing descriptions and the pace of the novel. It moved rather a bit slower than I personally cared for, b [...]

I'm gonna be honest I didn't finish this book. I read about 2 chapters and was so confused with what was happening that I re-read them and it didn't offer any clarity. I hate hate hate not finishing books but it was so much work to read that it made the entire process more of a chore than enjoyment.Based upon all the great reviews I am sure that the book itself isn't awful it just wasn't for me personally.
