"Over the last eight years sitting in Australian's living rooms, listening to them talk about the cost of food (but rarely, if ever, about the cost of overseas travel and iPads). This was an interesting little read, written by social researcher and self proclaimed 'foodie' Rebecca Huntley. This is an everyday topic for all of us, and she discusses socio economic factors v. obesity v. food knowledge v. vegetable intake v. family interaction around the dinner table, amongst others. What does 'food [...]

Why did it take me this long to discover Rebecca Huntley? While at The Opera House for The Festival of Dangerous Ideas, I picked up this wee little pink book, not realising the author had presented that day, and is regularly on the radio. The book sat on my bookshelf for ages, and it was only after a friend organised a ticket for me to see a story telling event at The Giant Dwarf Theatre I realised I'd seen the name somewhere and snatched up the book and read it.Turns out Rebecca Huntley is fabulo [...]

I do cooking as a hobby and when I heard of this book it got my interest especially the title because not many people I know of my age cooks. And by “cooks” I mean not just your simple eggs, hotdog and bacon. This is a really short, thin book only 64 pages, you could read it in one sitting. It explores the effect of cooking media to people, the author having interviewed the MasterChef Australia judges. Has cooking shows encouraged people to cook more? Also time. People come home from work ver [...]

This was a really enjoyable light non fiction read. It made me think about the topic and engage with it a bit more, as well as come to my own conclusions. I really liked her use of statistics, interviews, anecdotes and cultural studies. It wasn't an opinion piece, rather it was an intelligent drawing together of disparate elements into a well thought-out piece.
