When I was a young girl, pretty much the only books I was interested in reading were about animals, especially dogs and horses. I still enjoy them now through older eyes. This story is told from Honey’s point of view and she tells it in a true southern voice. Such a great way to relate her story.Honey knew to be careful. Many dangers awaited on the Creature Trail. But, being a pup, just one year old, she’s gregarious and full of energy, and that one careless moment lands her where she is now. [...]

I enjoyed this book and learned about the marvelous Dixie Dingo breed. The story itself was also pretty good, albeit keep in mind this is a children's book, not a full-length novel. I found the subject matter and narration appropriate for children, though I do wish that the author had toned back a bit on how Honey spoke.I know Honey is a dog and all that, but there was so much of Southern/country drawl/slang in the narration (not the dialogue) that I found it a tad off-putting at times. That was [...]

Miss Jane, a great animal humanitarian, doctors Honey's injuries until they can obtain help from a vet. She treats the starving Dixie Dingo with a can of Vienna sausage. Honey must remind herself not to snap for this "downright delicious" treat if she hopes to receive more. I loved Honey sharing her thoughts with the reader. (By the way, animal humanitarian may sound like a stretch of the imagination but "animal lover" just wasn't a strong enough term for Miss Jane and "animal activist" was accu [...]

When the trappers find her, they mistake her for a coyote and want to shoot Honey for her hide. Just when she is about to be shot, Miss Jane shows up. Miss Jane is a dog rescuer, breeder and advocate for the D [...]

I'm currently working on the 2015 Ultimate Reading Challenge which includes a book "set in your hometown." In my case, that happens to be Aiken, SC whereHoney the Dixie Dingo Dogtakes place. It was so interesting to read about Aiken's history and look back fondly on some of the places I remember like the Green Boundary Club, Hitchcock Woods, and the Wilcox Inn.The dog our family adopted when I was a teenager was a mutt from the local Humane Society. But, several times, we were told by neighbors [...]
