This is the same Arthur Hatto translation of Tristan that is published in the Penguin Classics series, but updated and revised by Francis Gentry and given a new forward and introduction, plus a nice sturdy hardcover binding. On the negative side, Hatto's essays and translation of Thomas' Tristan are gone, but I can live with that and much prefer a more modern updated translation and a binding that won't fall apart after a couple of reads. For the story of Tristan, Gottfried adapts the Courtly vers [...]

I truly loved this Isolde, finds Tristan almost dead and nurses him, along with her maid back to health. Tristan had been wounded in battle. The effects of the poison tipped arrow made it appear he was deceased. As is tradition, his fellow soldiers built him a boat and set him to sea to sail into the afterlife.Isolde lies about her identity as she's a princess and betrothed to another. But, the chemistry between she and Tristan is tangible. They consummate their longing for one anotherSoldiers r [...]

In the section of this book entitled “The Lover’s Cave”, both the symbolism of the title and the subject matter of this chapter reinforce an idea introduced earlier in the text, that surveillance is the enemy of love. I think this is one of those books you simply must see. It's both a classic from a romance aspect to a historical war piece. Truly it is an excellent drama with an amazing plot and although it's ending isn't much for your "fairy take happy ending seekers" it ends realistically for the time it's based in. The leading characters are really enthralling and you build a bond with them, you see their love as uncontrollable and passionate. Tristan is your hero archetype he's the King's son/nephew figur [...]

Tristan and Isolde was written approximately in the 12th century and is considered to be one of the main sources of inspiration for the Arthurian legend of Lancelot and Guinevere. It is the story of a Cornish knight and Irish princess who engage in an adulterous affair against their better judgement. The writing is very flowery; it can get tedious at times. But it's a classic, so I'd recommend reading it so you have some cultural literacy under your belt. Besides, considering the amount of influe [...]
