We meet Nola Nichols as she’s journeying from Barbados to London. She’s left her polo playing boyfriend behind and is returning after time away from the spotlight to model a new collection for a hot glossy magazine. Straight away the reader is introduced to Nola’s lifestyle and on the flight home, we get a glimpse of her personality that goes with that lifestyle. It’s during the flight back that she is cursed and from that moment, nothing is quite as it seemsAs Nola’s beauty fades she [...]

I really like the morality that runs through the heart of this story. It’s a short, sharp, snappy read that takes a light-hearted look at the importance we place upon appearances and the detrimental behavior this encourages. The treatment Nola dishes out to the old woman is fairly typical and probably not too far-fetched, if we’re all honest.Having a voodoo curse placed on the book’s main character is a unique and fun direction to take with this bite sized romance, and makes for an enterta [...]

This was the second book I received from Loveahappyending magazine to review and I finished it in about an hour! Although it is a relatively short book it’s fast-paced and very amusing. It’s about a young girl called Nola who is, how do you put it? Quite stuck-up and self obsessed. Being one of the most beautiful models in the UK she feels that her beauty is a curse until one night, on a flight back from Barbados she encounters a woman who is making her flight hell. After numerous complaints [...]

This is quite a short book – 70 pages – and I started reading it because I needed something short to read and, although I don’t really read much romance, the title intrigued me.Nola, a high-powered, glamorous model, with an inflated opinion of herself, came off the page as particularly unlikeable. Not a good start for a romantic story. She is on her way from the Caribbean to London for an important photo shoot, when she falls foul of a Haitian woman who puts a curse on her. From then on, t [...]

This new novella by author Janice Horton is a short read for Halloween time. At only 20,000 words it's a quick, entertaining contemporary read. Nola Nichols is a top fashion model, used to her appearance being preened and polished to perfection at all times. Whilst on a flight traveling back to the UK from the Caribbean, trying to sleep in her first class bed, Nola is irked by a woman who appears to be ill and has been moved up from economy making noise and causing disruption to her peaceful rou [...]

The beautiful but selfish and self-centered Nola is returning from her getaway to the Caribbean. Now that Nola was on her way back to the UK and looking forward to a big photo shoot all she wants to do is rest on the plan. But, all of that is thwarted when a woman is brought into the cabin where she is and begins making a lot of noise. Nola being the diva that she is is angered by this disruption. She is rude to the hysterical woman and to the flight crew. While Nola is busy demanding things the [...]

A short, lively and entertaining read that was fun to read and thoroughly enjoyable.Nola is a beautiful and up and coming top model and lands a job that could be her big break but on the flight back to the UK from the Caribbean, after drinking too much free champagne and wanting her beauty sleep she is disturbed by a panic stricken elderly lady and insults her! The elderly lady retaliates with strange mutterings about revealings but Nola takes no notice despite overhearing murmurs about the lady [...]

Loveless fashion model Nola Nichols thinks being beautiful is a curse; that is until she is cursed and her looks begin to fade just a week before the most important photo shoot of her career.Nola rejects all rational explanation on what might be causing her lost looks and decides she has to find a way to get uncursed. This imaginative quest takes her from the Caribbean to Glasgow's own City of the Dead. Along the way, she finds herself taking part in a rather unconventional funeral, involved in [...]

Nola Nichols is a top model. She had broken free from her humble beginnings in Glasgow and turned her life around and was now a national icon, who models for the top UK designers, make-up manufacturers and prestigious car companies.Nola’s life is great, until on a flight back to the UK from the Caribbean, she is rude to a fellow woman passenger, angry words are exchanged. Not long after this incident things start to go wrong for Nola, she begins to lose her looks when strange happenings occur. [...]

Nola (Nora) Nichols is 23 yrs old rising star in a fashion model industry. This is a short novella and was perfect rainy day reading for me. Just the sort of lovely story to relax with. Nola is a top model. She has everything going for her and is thought to be one a very beautiful woman. However, on a flight back from Barbados, Nola’s life is about to take on a staggering transformation thanks to a Mambo or a voodoo priestess. Can Nola really break the curse and get her life back on track? There’s everything at stake here, including a top modelling job. But, as Nol [...]

How Do You Voodoo? is a novella of approximately 20,000 words and what a fun 20,000 words it is.I really enjoyed the light-hearted tone of the novella and the humour that Janice Horton brings to it. There's a little bit of everything, romance, intrigue, mystery, black magic and fun. It touches on a few more serious issues, but all in keeping with the style and genre. The story takes a trip to Scotland and it was really great reading about the area.A really fun and heart-warming read to curl up w [...]

Be careful who you upset this is a unique little story and what a brilliant idea from Scottish author Janice Horton. Immediately you begin reading it you recognise her inimitable style and if you have read Janice’s other novels (which I can heartily recommend), you will not be disappointed with Voodoo! Short stories can sometimes leave you feeling a little cheated, but this novella is an absolute delight. Nola experiences a range of emotions as the story unfolds and finds herself up against s [...]

After reading Janice's book Bagpipes and Bullshot (which I thoroughly enjoyed) I read this first book of her Voodoo Trilogy and enjoyed it quite a bit. A light and easy read with a different story than I'm used to. Humor, fashion industry, vanity and voodoo curses are a few of the things you come across. Without giving too much away careful of who you sit next to on an airplane! You never know what can happen. I found myself at times hanging on by a thread wondering what was going to happen next [...]

A great novella with a unique theme! Meet self-obsessed Nola and watch her slowly fall apart until she meets handsome doctor Louis! Can he uncurse her and will their unconventional start lead to more than hocus pocus?A delightful story - my one complaint - wish it had been a full length novel! 4 stars!

  • Melanie Robertson-King

Janice Horton has done it again! How Do You Voodoo? is a great read with larger than life characters. Even though the heroine, Nola, whose real name is Nora is selfish, you can sympathise with her plight. After all, she believes she's had a voodoo spell cast on her.I particularly liked the segment that takes place in the Glasgow Necropolis, but then I happen to like cemeteries.

An entertaining read which I devoured in one sitting. I really like how Nola developed and grew over the course of the tale. I have the next in the series already waiting to be read!
