This is the first book in a series of detective stories featuring a black P.I. by the name of Vic Prince, which may sound like standard crime novel fare but by placing the leading character in 1940’s Liverpool during the war, Mackenzie Brown develops a highly original and exciting adventure. The writing works on so many levels, skillfully building an intriguing story through several sub-plots, from a missing cat to the search for illegal guns to murder and corruption. I loved the whole atmosph [...]

Vic Prince is a Liverpool private detective during World War II, and is on the hunt for a Persian blue cat, which is the connection between a number of people, and linked to several deaths, and other mysterious incidents. This is an entertaining story which flows very well, with vivid characters, and a quietly intense, but humorously subtle atmosphere. The period detail and descriptions of milieu are excellent, and provide an appropriate backdrop for the happenings, but in a way which complements [...]

Wow, I must say that I really enjoyed the first instalment of The Prince of the City series. It has all the elements that enthral me; crime, black market dealings and espionage set in war-time Liverpool. The story flowed at a good and steady pace which had me turning pages as I was immersed in Vic Prince’s world. Looking forward to the next in the series. A 5* read.

Great read. This introduction to Vic Prince and his world is a real page turner. Great pace, great characters and an intriguing plot line make this difficult to put down. I'm not usually a lover of anything to do with war or war-time but this was definitely worth making an exception for. I was so interested in the story-line I had to move straight on to part 2.

The book is a marvel. It's 1940's Liverpool and World War II is in full swing. The detective has his hands full finding a missing cat and then bodies start floating in the river. The book covers the Chinese, the Russians, and a tangle of fascinating crimes. It starts off strong and finishes spectacularly. I could not be more happy with this story.
