Oh my goodness! This book is amazing! When is the next book coming out? I have to know! Full review:I REALLY enjoyed this book. When I first read this book in January, it was on a total whim. I'd gotten it on netgalley and initially thought I'd read a chapter to see if I'd like it before I went to sleep around 1 AM. Three hours later and I was no longer sleepy, eyes wide open and trying to process what I'd just finished reading. I immediately went to and amazon to see if the second book was ava [...]

Love it! I like how the dialogue was in the traditional language of the time period ( ie like Tis and mere) and the plot was amazing. Although I did not understand some of the lines like "Owk I have no clue what that means ( maybe that the person is excited ?). The book switches between Annelore and William's perspectives told from a third person viewpoint. Which was nice to read about what Annelore was thinking and then learn about what William was thinking/doing. I love reading books that deal [...]

This is definitely the type of novel I would pick up on my own in a bookstore. I'm a huge fan of British and European history (even though Troixden is a fake country) and love when it's intermixed with a story. I like learning and being entertained at the same time, and Heirs & Spares fit the bill perfectly because I learned about the time period and more about how people lived, while also being entertained by the romance and the court politics. Despite Troixden being a fake country, the his [...]

E-galley received through Netgalley for reviewIt's 1569. In the small kingdom of Troixden, in northern France, cruel king James has just died without an heir. When his brother William comes on the throne, his first order of business is having heirs; for this he needs a queen. Determined to gain popular favour by choosing a wife outside of the court, William's eyes fall on Annelore of Beaubridge. Annelore is twenty-one years old, and an accomplished healer and midwife. She has always expected to [...]

I don’t read a lot of historical romance, but when I do I am disappointed that it’s all a bit UK-centric. Keep in mind that I don’t read this stuff widely at all, but it explains a bit why I was intrigued by this independent novel, Heirs & Spares. It’s set in an imaginary kingdom, Troixden, neighbour to Germany and France, that’s caught up in the politics of Elizabeth I’s time but also in the instability of its own diverse regions, especially since there’s a new king on the thr [...]

  • Sarah - Six Blue Marbles

It's been a long time since I've read a historical fiction novel that was purely historical fiction. All the ones I've read in the past found some way to add a mysterious mythical creature to begin a star-crossed romance. I knew when receiving this book it would be about star-crossed love and mythical creatures, which is probably why I was so excited for it to arrive! I needed to read a purely historical fiction novel with no spurts of magical intervention, just castles and kings and everything [...]

Heirs & Spares is a marvelously researched peek into the 16th Century and what life among the well-born might have been like. I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction/romance which tells the tale of Lady Annelore and her journey to become queen. She is very reluctant to leave her home and her life-time friend and love, Sir Bryan. But when the King commands, you must obey. She is selected as one of three ladies from the kingdom among whom King William will choose his bride. When she recei [...]

This one, provided by netgalley, was a little bit different than your average historical romance. It's set in a time period hardly any romance is set in, even though it's ideal for intrigue, repressed emotions and strict standards of behavior. It's also set in a fictional country and the romance is between a king and his queen, all of which are slightly unusual. For me, the best parts were probably the intrigue, and I felt it could have done with more of this, and perhaps more complex intrigue. T [...]

  • Meg - A Bookish Affair

"Heirs and Spares" is a historical romance book with a lot of good historical detail. Annelore always thought she'd marry her childhood sweetheart, Bryan. When King William comes a-callin', her plans might have to change whether she wants it or not. Looking for love? Palace intrigue? This book might fit the bill for you.I really enjoyed the romance between King William and Annelore. Although Annelore doesn't seem wholly convinced in the beginning that marrying William is going to be the best thi [...]

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.I love historical romance and this one was pretty good. This is definitely a romance novel, not a historical fiction novel. But it is not too hot and heavy. No bodice ripping or steamy scenes.Set in the 16th century in a fictitious European monarchy, Lady Annelore is the only child of a widowed duke. King William has recently taken over the throne from his brother James who was a tyrannical ruler loved by no one. William needs a wife and is determine [...]

Enjoyable, fun and I loved it!I haven’t read an historical romance book in some time and I’m glad I got the opportunity to ready this. As soon as I started reading it I enjoyed it and as I went on it got even better. Annalore of Beaubourg is one great girl especially for her time. I love her wit, charm and the way she speaks her mind. Her character is so well written you can’t help but fall in love with her. She and King William make a great pair and it’s fun to see how they develop as a [...]

I can't think of any higher praise than to say that I found myself completely worried about what was going to happen to Anna and William, the two main characters. When things looked promising, I was delighted; when trouble loomed, I got a knot in my stomach. All of Spohr's characters come off the page as true human beings with depth, not merely cardboard stand-ups. In addition to writing a rousing story, Spohr has created in Annabelle one of the most authentic followers of Christ I have read of [...]

I received an ebook ARC from Netgalley.I don't remember requesting this book, but I found it on my Kindle and figured sure, I'll read iten I couldn't put it down! What's a girl to do when the King chooses you to be his bride? That is the question that Annalore has to answer in this novel. She always assumed she'd marry her childhood friend, until she is chosen to be queen. I thought this was addressed beautifully, and shows the conflict shes feels. I think the relationship between Annalore and Wi [...]

J.L. Spohr’s "Heirs and Spares" is one of those rare books I could have read in one sitting if not that the real world had other plans for my day. Set in the 16th century, Annelore—a woman ahead of her time—is chosen to be the bride of King William. Despite efforts to escape marriage to a stranger whom she believes she has every reason to fear, William proves that the sins of his predecessor are far from hereditary. However, no sooner does romance blossom between the newly-wed couple than [...]

This was a little difficult to review because on the one hand it was a really enjoyable light read and I kept wanting to know how the end would happen. I did expect more deception and was slightly disappointed when I didnt get it but even without that I dont think the story was hurt too much. Annelenore saves the story even if sometimes I did find her a tad "much" and King William was so very sweet the other characters dont have a lot of depth but that doesnt harm the overall story in my opinion [...]

I rounded up because it moved steadily toward 4-starness throughout and left me decidedly in favour of reading the next instalment. Trying to navigate the flowery, formal, and archaic language of a 16th century court and the contemporary and casual intimacy of the characters' thoughts, confessions, and outbursts results in alternately charming and clunky dialogue and narration. Or perhaps the Beaubourgian language just has some unusual rules of usage for the second person familiar, etc that don' [...]

I really don't know much about the Medieval era. I concentrate on Knights and Steeds but the rest just baffles me. So I was surprised when I really liked this story. You have a new King who needs to marry. Then comes the Lady who wants to marry her childhood friend but gets chosen to marry the King. This era must have been like living on a land mine. Who will tick me off today so they tell tales on me? Don't even get me going into the Religions and who is best and who roasts today. King William [...]

A great bookI really enjoyed this book. I can't wait for the next one. I fell in love with the characters, the good and bad. Annelore, our heroine, is a likable character. Your heart goes out to her as her whole world is about to change. William, the King, the man Annelore is to marry against her will. The story is full of interesting characters who add twists. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. It left to many things unfinished. I'm hoping the sequel is coming out soon.

  • Alana

First off, I love how this book feels, it's like fuzzy silicone. An unexpected love story of Victorian proportions. Will and Anna are wonderful characters who you root for throughout the story. You will even love the characters that scheme and plot against these two. I'm not much for romance novels so I don't really classify this as one, but they make you believe it is possible to fall in love. J.L.Spohr is a wonderful author :)

I think this book has a spell cast on it. The words are easy going, as is the plot, once I start reading, there was no way I was going to put it down quite easily. The phrases are curiously intoxicating luring you to keep turning one page after another to find out more. You might be asking why did I give 4 out of 5 stars. Because somehow I felt that a bit more of depth to the characters and to the story would have enhanced the book exquisitely.I was given the book to review.

Awh, this is such a sweet, innocent story. I felt much like little riding hood reading this walking through the woods, basket swinging song a singing. It is an easy and fast read. I loved it for it's uncomplicated plot, the fact that their is NOT really a love triangle and that in the end it is love that conquers all even hardship. The story is well told, easy to read and fun to get back to. For the genre, a perfect fit.Would I read more by this author? Absolutely.WaAr

Heirs & Spares has been a delightful summertime read, providing just the right mix of intrigue and romance to keep the pages turning. Spohr has a strong grasp on world-building, bringing the fictional land of Troixden to life without getting bogged down in details. Hopefully she will return to this setting to tell the stories of its other inhabitants and deliver more just desserts to a few villains.

  • Gill it in one day (bad habit of mine). a little predictable in one or two places but no less enjoyable for thatThankyou for not going pornographic in the bedroom scenes.I enjoyed the politics and found the book a really good read.(book received free from Good Reads, First Reads)

This was such a fun read! I would have read the whole book in one day if my family had let me. The characters are well developed and endearing, and the plot kept me guessing. There was more marital intimacy than I prefer, but I am certainly more prudish than your average reader. Heirs & Spares is a fabulous beginning to a series, and I am looking forward to book 2!

  • Jennifer Paterson

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! Set in 1569, it's a great piece of historical fiction, but the issues that unfold invite the reader to unpack questions around gender, theology, justice, and marriage. Love how some of these characters were ahead of their times and the authentic relationships that unfold!

I received this book as a giveaway. I read it on Holiday and enjoyed it. The plot was predictable, but the book was fun as a change from my usual genres. It is not complex or difficult but I fouhnd I cared about the charaters and I am looking forward to the sequel, which I will definately read.I received the book for free through First Reads.

I could not put this book down!! It was that amazing. The way J.L. Spohr spun the story, held me captive. I loved the characters, the castles and the romance between the King and Queen. It is so rare to have a King and Queen fall in love and stay that even though the Queen failed to get with child. I would highly suggest reading this story if you love the royal family.

  • Shelagh

A self-important, pompous novel, Heirs and Spares failed to engage. The dialogue was wooden from start to finish, peppered with irritating little exclamations such as "owk" and "tush", and the story failed to flow. I don't think there was one endearing character, the plot was weak and I can't begin to say how happy I am to have finished this one!
