3.5*Another very short story, more of an introduction really but interesting enough to make me want to know more about this dystopian world that Jessica Freely has built this story around. I have read His Own Devices which introduces the Hanovan universe a while ago and enjoyed it and this little free short as reminded me how interesting it was. I'll definitely check out the second book in the Freedom series ongoing story of Droje the freedom fighter and his now on the run companion and Hanovan [...]

I feel like I dropped into a story that was already happening and I needed to play catch up. There are an abundance of references that I had to try to make sense of with what I was given. At times I felt like Unlawful could be categorized as PWP with a plot which seemed counterintuitive. Not that I mind PWP from time to time, I just couldn't make sense out of what was happening and had a difficult time discerning whether or not I was supposed to care. Well, that coupled with out of about 30 page [...]

I think this had a ton of potential and I'm kind of disappointed. I wish this had been longer, I think if the author had given a little more time to this it could've been a lot better, because the elements are there. Not enough time to get into the characters or feel any emotional connections, but I like the idea, so I'm curious about where it will go.

Main Characters: Marcus Droje (Freedom Fighter/ex-Corporate Security) & Larke (Zenesco Corp. Worker)Key Themes: Social Differences, In the ClosetLocation: Hanovan UniverseMM romance that takes place somewhere in an "Orwellian" universe, where a multi-planetary corporation, Zenesco, has the monopoly on everything (work, food, laws, etc). The book is only 38 pages long.Larke is an unhappy corporate minion, in a world were being gay is against the law. One rainy night, he stumbles on a naked an [...]

I liked the beginning and the end of this, and the sex was hot. But the transition from beginning into the sex was nonexistent. They needed at least 5 more pages around page 12 before "he picked Larke up and carried him into the bedroom." Seriously? And while Droje gettin' all Dom-y was sexy as hell, it also came out of nowhere and I hate the intuitive/psychic Dom trope. But still enjoyable, I'm definitely interested in checking out #2 with that little teaser at the end (view spoiler)[the news sa [...]

Unlawful is the first book in the Freedom trilogy. It does a beautiful job of introducing readers to the two main characters, Droje and Larke. It also sets up the Hanovan Universe for readers, with it's caste-like social structure and political history. Beware of the short story cliff-hanger! However, this is a well written series full of characters you're sure to fall in love with and will want to follow to the very end!Book 2 - UndauntedBook 3 - UnboundFrom the same Universe - His Own Devices

So I totally have to go buy His Own Devices now Thanks Ms. Freely ;) Droje and Larke lead very different lives in a world where being who they are (namely Gay) is illegal. they happen upon one another when Droje is at his lowest and Larke takes him in at great personal risk (though he doesn't realize it at the time). This is a hot little short (well not too little, enough to have its own plot) and definitely whet my appetite for more from this Universe, but can be read on it's own as well. Great [...]

A hot short story set in the same universe as His Own Devices. Don't let the evil author lure you into reading this fiction which might incite rebellion. Do your duty as a citizen of the corporation and tell Corp Sec which Uncon terrorist gave this file to you.

  • Vfields Don't touch my happy!

Okay I don't do short works but I like Jessica Freely and this one was free. I'm sad because its what I'd call a serial and yuk! I think she had something that could have been a cool space romp but it was just a underwritten chapter.

The idea of the book was interesting but it all just happened too quick to be believable. They went from being nervous strangers to having passionate sex within a few pages.

    I want more!

This was a very short story and seems like it really should have been part of a full length novel. We found out a bit about the world that Larke and Brode lived in. Their characters were pretty well developed, considering the length of this short story. But the author didn't get me interested enough to really want to buy any more of the books in the series.

  • Barb ~rede-2-read~

Nice setup for a longer series. Seems to have potential, but this one is mostly world-building with a super hot sex scene thrown in.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.5 stars Author Jessica Freely and her Freedom series about Larke and Droje in an alternate universe where the Corporation rules all - contracted employees and slaves throughout the galaxy, is an faced paced sexy action piece told through the three stories: Unlawful (Freedom #1), Unbound (Freedom #2), and Undaunted (Freedom #3). Each story can be a standalone short story, but the story is best told in sequence. T [...]

Let me start by stating that I am not a huge fan of sci-fi. Whether het or gay romance, there is something about the application of science fiction that usually leads off the mark, either the world building is too cumbersome or the romance is forced and unbelievable. Other times it can be extremely weird with awkward explanations. In Unlawful, Jessica Freely immediately yet smoothly tosses the reader into her dystopian world (the Hanovan Universe) where the Zenesco Corporation controls everythin [...]

Not bad at all! I give this short story 3.5 stars, which I'll round up to four. The writing was pretty good. Just before reading this, I read another similar short story that was so well-written I couldn't even come up with an adjective to convey howgically artistic it was. This one didn't reach quite that level of mastery, but Freely can hold her own, for sure. I did think that the voices of her characters' internal monologues were particular authentic and well-written.Funnily enough, it was the [...]

Rating: 4 CupsIt would be so easy to give up and die, which would make Corp Sec very happy. But Marcus Droje has too many people counting on him.The snickers and snide comments make Larke cringe, yet he has no choice if he wants to keep his job.Finding Droje beaten and naked in the alley brings to life a level of desire Larke has never felt for before. Same sex relationships on Hanovan are strictly forbidden, which is what has gotten Larke in the trouble he is in at work. Droje’s claims agains [...]

The author gave me a free copy in return for a review: I’ve not read His Own Devises yet but I definitely want to now. This was a very enjoyable short read. Although I don’t know the full story, the author gives us just enough information to have a very good idea of what is going on at this point. We are certainly given enough background information to make us want to go and read His Own Devises. LOL! The story has a plot and the character have dimension. And the sex… was hot!The story is [...]

The actual review is here:/review/show/(I don't double rate.)I got this as a free read for buying His Own Devices on release week, but it is now available to purchase.I read this story first. It's a short story, and I always have a love/hate relationship with romantic shorts, since I always want more more more, and Unlawful makes me want more. It's a hot, sexy short of two men, one a freedom fighter, the other a corporate worker, fall in love in a so [...]

Although this was a very short story it was packed with a lot of plot. I felt bad for Larke having to live his life being gay as a secret because it was illegal. The ridicule he dealt with from his co-workers was shit. And when he rescued Droge it was beautiful, he was trying his hardest to fight his feelings for this injured man, but the pull between the two of them was too intense. The sex was off the charts hot! And the ending was awesome, exactly what I wanted to happen. Anxious to read more [...]

I liked this! It was interesting and attention catching. The characters were well fleshed and had very real personalities right off the bat. The only thing that I don't like was that it sort of dropped you in the world without explaining certain things so I was left a bit confused. The sex scenes were hot. And the story itself was fun, interesting and easy to follow and understand. I'll be looking into the rest of this series.

I received this book from the author in return for an honest review, so here it is: This is a companion story to His Own Devices but you don't need to have read it to enjoy this story. For such a short story Unlawful was packed full of excellent world building and a very hot storyline. The main couple are fully rounded individuals and the fast relationship actually makes sense within the context of the storyline. It truly deserves all the praise I've read about it.

  • Diane Dannenfeldt

I hate when books are broken up like this because just as you start getting into it it ends. What I have read so far I have enjoyed. This society really sucks. Maybe in the future we ca get all the books in a box set, that would be awesome.

  • Ellen

This mini-book was a tease. I want to know what happens next.

  • Ciara1973

Love this story. Nice short read, could have been longer though.

  • DeeNeez

Loved it! A short story that has a full plot and so scortching hot. I fell right into this dystopia world Freely has built. Potential for a great series. I'm definitely going to follow.

  • Katy Beth Mckee

Interesting story plot in a big brother is watching you world. There is a lot more that will have to play out in future stories.

  • Syfy

Hoping the rest of this series is just as good!
