At first I thought: "Oh, the Doctor is killed off and then they'll quickly revive him with a wave of the hand-explanation - how boring". But that didn't happen. They did kill off the Doctor. And he actually stayed dead. "Oh, how deliciously unpredictable", I thought instead. By the second part they certainly had my attention, and as the Word Lord popped up, I was thrilled to see how it would all pan out. He reminds me of the Master in many ways, but that could hardly be taken as anything but a c [...]

This story follows on directly from the preceding one, Project: Destiny, with much of it taking place in the same setting, although there are no continuing characters, other than the regular cast. In the mid two parts, however, it does wander around rather further, taking the opportunity to bring Ace and Hex into the foreground and focus on their reactions to events at the end of the first part. There are a number of good points in the story, most notably bringing back 6th Doctor audio companion [...]

This is a very well written 7th Doctor story. It should the 7th Doctor at his manipulative peak. The writer shows the story from both of the companions perspectives. There are chunks where we don't see the Doctor at all. This gives Ave and Hex a chance to really shine. I will warn the uninitiated that this story is not a good stand alone one. You need to be familiar with the continuity of the Forge stories to understand what is going on. The interview with the author, at the end, really explains [...]

"You're a heretic!" "I'm a historian!"Evelyn may be the best companion ever! I must say I was disappointed there wasn't more Evelyn in the audio. But her part at the end was priceless. I do love her and McCoy. But then she's just brilliant with all of them. I did like the Word Lord better in this one and I liked how they dealt with him. Ace was brilliant as always.

  • Anne Barwell

Loved it. Very clever use of word play which makes sense considering the villain of the piece. Nice to revisit Evelyn, and have Hex and Ace in the spotlight too.

  • Christopher Buchanan

The essence of seventh Doctor stories. Tricky, manipulative, complex. It will keep you absorbed all the way through. Tons of loose ends get tied and lots of continuity. Fantastic story.

  • Christopher Hatch

Okay, so it's a bit continuity heavy but an enjoyable and clever story. The Seventh Doctor at his manipulative best.

A witty and wordy tale in which we bid farewell to Evelyn.
