My sister, three brothers, and I grew up on a Vermont dairy farm in a region known as the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, USA, where my Scottish ancestors settled almost two hundred years ago.Our lives revolved around our church, our community, and the hard work of farming Along with milking and feeding the animals each morning and evening, there was the work of each season maple sugaring, plowing, picking stone, planting, haying, corn cutting, harvest, cutting wood. While my parents lives were consumed by farming and providing for their children, they managed to pass on much to us My mother, a teacher, instilled in us a love of books and reading, and a curiosity about everything, while my father, besides being an excellent athlete, has also encouraged our interest in the natural world, whether it was identifying birds, trees and wildflowers, or pointing out constellations on a starry night. My book As Long As There Are Mountains is based on my childhood and my love of the farm, the land, and the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

My youngest started Kindergarten today. He had library for his first time today as well and this is what he came home with. I haven't had a chance to read it to him yet but I've read through it and it's a wonderful little story with great watercolor pictures (which is probably why he picked it). *update* I read it to him last night and we talked about the pictures, getting lost in the woods and living back in the 1700's. He was very interested in it all and when he learned it was based on a true [...]

Wonderful illustrations! I liked how on almost ever other page it was nothing but an illustration. I also liked the suspense behind the plot. It was long enough to hold attention and suspense but short enough to read aloud.

This is a sweet, true story about a little girl who got lost in the woods and was protected by a black bear for five days before she was found. She was found by a man who had a dream about her sleeping under a tree being watched over by a bear. All of my children (six and under) listened well to this story, jumped up from their puzzles to see the pictures on each page (nice watercolors on every page), and were able to understand the story without any explanations. The little people also were abl [...]

This is a true story set in New Hampshire. The author is a distant relative of Sarah Whitcher, the little girl whom the story is about. Sarah is just three years old when she wanders off by herself and becomes lost in the woods. A rescue team was sent out to look for her to no avail. A man comes to town and tells Sarah’s parents that he had a dream and he knows where Sarah is. When Sarah is found she tells everyone of the big black dog that kept her warm at night. Only the man who rescued her [...]

One of my all time favourite books as a child, I still have the copy I purchased at the book fair in the 3rd grade. A wonderful tale based on the authors' great-great-great-great-great aunt Sarah who was lost in the woods at the age of 3 for three days (their great-great-great-great grandfather was born 7 years later when Sarah was 10). A moving story that is wonderfully illustrated, it's a must have in any child's storybook collection

Sweet book about a little girl who doesn't listen to her parents and ends up getting lost in the woods but befriended by an unlikely character. This would be a good book for describing similarities and differences, making predictions and discussing theme.

A children's book that I like! What a surprise! This one recounts a true story from the 1700's where a little girl wondered in the woods and a bear "protected" her. Very interesting. Very sweet. I wish all children's books could be so good.

Warnock takes an old family legend and brings it to life hundreds of years later! It's so beautiful in a folkloric sort of way. A child who is lost in the woods and feared dead is saved by a black bear (which she believes is a big dog!). Another bit of magic.
