Mostly excellent stories and essays. Even the genres I don't care about, like mystery and sports writing, yielded some great pieces -- like the extremely sad tale of the L.A. Time sportswriter who came out as transsexual (I remember reading along with the the events when they happened). The Best American people were smart and sneaky to release this -- it did make me want the Travel Writing and Essays volumes. For me, the standouts in addition to the Mike Penner essay were one about killer whales [...]

The fiction was pretty disappointing. BUT "The Killer In The Pool" by Tom Zimmerman, Jr. was such a fantastic article. Worth looking into for that piece alone.

I Don't Get ItI love to read. I rarely run across material that I don't like to read. How the entries in this volume rank as the best of anything is a great mystery to me. Most of the writing is narcissistic or self gratifying. Some of it is haphazard. The short about ghosts was fairly well written nonsensical woo. I hate woo. Give it to Oprah or Deepak Chopra. I don't want it. I'll stick to The Best American Science and Nature Writing, thanks. Maybe I'm just not artsy fartsy enough to appreciat [...]

Each year, the "Best American" series puts out a collection for each of the major writing forms (short story, travel writing, mystery, sports), highlighting what it believes to be a handful of the best writing from that genre for the year. This year for the first time, "The Best American" team released a cheap ($0.99) sampler of their collections, which included two pieces from each of the collection.Any writing collection will be a mixed bag, with some pieces alternately resonating and boring d [...]

If you are a fan of good writing, and I think most of us on this site are, treat yourself to this series. I've always enjoyed the series. I've bought, in years past, the Travel, Non-required reading, Science, and Essays. This is an e-book sampler from this year's offerings. You get short stories, essays, mysteries, science and nature, sports, and travel. What a selection. I enjoyed every bit of it, even theses genres I would not generally explore on my ow like sports (I like to play sports and wa [...]

I really enjoyed this collection from The Best American series. All the entries were interesting and were written beautifully. My favorite sections were the Sports Writing (who would have thunk that, I'm not at all sporty) and the Nature/Science Writing. I still don't know if I'd be interested in reading a whole book of Sports Writing, but wow! I highly recommend this.

It is a sampler. Better to buy the real collections. I like some sorts, the science and nature and essays. Not travel and short stories. That is to say I like short stories but not in this format. Give me a collection of short stories by an author or in a genre and I am happy. I like to be happy. In general, this does not make me so happy as I might be.

  • Sarah

glad i read this. i always buy the short story collections, but the science and essays and travel writing in this sampler was pretty good. next year i might buy those collections too!

  • Lora

Interesting samplinglearned a few things. Good read.

  • Jesse
