This is good writing; a relaxed but supremely competent style that flows effortlessly and totally captivates the reader. The background of the Crimean War works well, but in any context the characterisation would be masterly, (and the interweaving of historical and fictional characters is flawless). A joy to read, and one that will be read again – surely the measure of any fine book.
