Ewan Macrae is an uncomplicated, 14 year-old English lad growing up in the seaside town of Bude. Ewan realizes that he might be gay and in love with [...]

This sort of young adult coming out novel wouldn't normally be my sort of book as I'm a bit passed all that. However I came across this book purely by accident - and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a long book so don't expect a lot of evenings reading by the fire. I read it in a day. The book however is very well written and although written for late teens the quality of observations and writing means that anyone could find something worthwhile to reflect on. The plot is simple enough. Ewan [...]

This is a superbly crafted page turner for anyone like me who took years to come out of the closet. A coming out story that still reverberates long after learning to live comfortably in my own skin.I should also say that I owe a debt of gratitude to the late David Rees, who died of AIDS in 1993, for the truly wonderful things that he wrote in a review and an essay about my mother, Doris Buchanan Smith's classic children's book:"It will be difficult to find a children's book this autumn by a new [...]

A simple coming out story. I'm sure there are plenty of books like this written for young people who are just discovering themselves. It covers all the thoughts and feelings I had at that time in my life and did stir up memories and emotions of my personal experience when my parents found out I was gay.

This short coming of age story narrated by Ewan Macrae, commencing when he is fifteen years old, is well written and makes for a pleasurable read. It is a very positive story, despite the problems Ewan faces as he comes to accept his sexuality. I did however find it at times a little preachy in tone.
