Re-read in 2016 since we live near Comstock Ferre and plan to use this company's seeds for the garden---------------------------------------Each year I try to do something new in my garden. This is pretty difficult because my south facing backyard is so small and my dogs really do need room to do their business, eat large pieces of mulch that result in emergency surgery, etc.We started growing vegetables from seed a few years ago. It is definitely more cost effective for us and we've experienced [...]

I came across this book when I ordered seeds this year from The Baker Creek Seed Company. Baker Creek had been mentioned in a newspaper article I read, and I liked the idea that they only sold heirloom, non-hybrid, open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds. I decided to buy my gardening seeds from them, and while browsing their website I came across this book that they have also published. The book is interesting, and full of wonderful color photographs. It tells a history of Jere and Emille Gettle, the fou [...]

A comprehensive guide to organic gardening. It starts with a history of the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, then continues with a couple of sections on how to garden and especially how to garden in a city space. The bulk of the book consists of instructions for growing and saving seeds for almost fifty different fruits and vegetables, from amaranth to watermelon.

  • Brian Marshall

A must read of those serious about growing heirloom vegetables. This book isn't just a reference book but an adventure through the eyes of Jere Gettles. I loved reading about his adventures in his search for heirloom seeds.

  • Brady

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. the photos are amazing, and the text is very pleasant to read. it definitely reflects the spirit of enjoyable and meaningful natural gardening.

I love this seed company. I enjoyed a more in depth look at theVarieties of veggies

  • Shannan

Liked this book for the beginning stories of how Baker Street evolved and currently operating. Not relevant to me was the last 75% of the book which discusses how to grow vegetables. But I would recommend to budding backyard gardeners as a comprehensive guide. Stunning photographs.

  • Kate

a truly beautiful gardening book and more! I loved Jere's stories and info on different varieties of vegetables and growing tips.Jere and his wife started Baker Creek seeds and are passionate about organic gardening and it comes through in this bookhighly recommended for gardeners!

  • Hannah

There was a lot of good information about raising different kinds of plants. Occasionally it was repetitive, but that probably helps retain the information

  • Cheryl Gatling

I picked up this book at the libary. As soon as I opened it, I knew I needed to take it home because of the gorgeous photographs. This book is like vegetable porn. Oh, my! Just look at those tomatoes, melons, and squash! I also enjoyed the text, but it was less remarkable than the pictures. Jere Gettle starts by describing how he grew up with a home-schooling, homesteading family, gardening as soon as he could walk, and starting a seed company while still in his teens. Then he traveled the world [...]

The author begins with his upbringing and his life was somewhat similar to "little house on the prairie". How he got involved in saving seeds began when he noticed his favorite seeds disappearing from catalogs. He shares his experience in Mexico, Guadalajara, and Bangkok for the purpose of buying/saving seeds. At the end of the book he lists foods; their history, saving seeds, how to grow the food and what to do with it in the kitchen. Resources are also given. I found the book to be fascinating [...]

Great for beginners and advanced gardeners alike. Really great "How to Garden" section that isn't full of a lot of extraneous info that makes it seem overwhelming. Great A-Z section for individual vegetables. Inspirational background about how Jere Gettle got Baker Creek Seed Company started. To be honest, I didn't expect much from this book but it turned out to be a very nice surprise that it is so well done.

  • Alison

Whether you are a novice gardener wondering where to begin, or an experienced green thumb, this is a wonderful read! The passion the authors have for their way of life and the work they do comes through loud and clear. Inspiring anyone with an interest in gardening to get busy and plant one. The how-to information on various crops was presented in a way that was easy and enjoyable, without being dry or boring.I highly recommend this one to anyone.

Gettle is inspiring and funny and useful all at once. We are growing our garden from seed for the first time this year and found everything we wanted to know (and more) about our heirlooms from this book. Even if you aren't growing a garden this book is an engaging read and by the end of the first few chapters I would be surprised if you didn't find yourself wanting to be a gardener (and seed saver as well).

  • Shelley

I'm a farmer, but I used to be a gardener and I not-so-secretly envy all the home-gardeners out there. This is my new favorite garden book. It is full of great gardening information for beginners, or experienced gardeners, and I love the story of how the Gettles started out with a passion for gardening and seed saving and preservation of heirloom varieties. I would buy it again just for the photography. If you get the book, make sure you get the seed catalog too—Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.

  • Mathew Carruthers

Very informative and very interesting - entertaining, as well. This is one of the most informative gardening books I've ever read - and the information it contains solidifies the argument against GMOs and big business agriculture. This is a plea to save the planet. Grow your own food, diversify food crop seed stock to minimize disease and insect predation, and live healthier. I'm convinced.

  • Celeste Dailey

For beginning gardeners like me, this is a great book. I learned a lot about gardening basics, and the A-Z growing guide that addresses the author's favorite fifty vegetables is very helpful for more specific information. I also enjoyed learning how and why Jere Gettle started his heirloom seed company. I will be going back to this book again and again for gardening help.

  • Steve

This book is filled with reasons to grow heirloom fruits and vegetables from the way they taste, to the amazing color variety, but my favorite part of this book is the instructions of how to collect and store seeds. My other gardening books talk about how to grow, but do not touch on how to re-grow from self collected seed. I plan to try and collect some seeds from tomatoes this year.

  • Tessa

This is a really simple but complete book on growing heirlooms. No surprise that Baker Creek would deliver a quality product! There is useful info for beginning gardeners, how to make the switch to organic and, my favorite, how to save seed from our favorite crops. The Heirloom Gardener magazine that they put out is also really informative and we enjoy reading it whenever it comes!

  • Linda Watson

Loved this book! I'd love to have my own copy and will be giving it as a gift to new gardeners. Beautiful pictures, inspiring message, helpful tips, and downright fun. I'd love to visit Baker Creek Village too.

  • Karen

I have planted seed for Baker Creek for many year so was very excited to read this via my kindle. The book meet every expectation and more. Wonderful for anyone interested in or actively growing vegetables.

  • Ariel Stirling

Bought this book hoping to find a collection of stories about heirloom plants and their origins. I was disappointed that the book was not what I expected, but the story was engaging nonetheless.

  • Jacqueline Bell Al-guweiri

Love reading about Jere's travels and experiences. Did you know there used to be pink and green corn? I didn't Looking forward to starting an heirloom garden this year with no GMO seeds!!! Fingers crossed its a success! This is a must read for all gardeners who want to get back to basics!

  • Andrea

Beautiful stories and inspiring images. The second half goes though details for growing each of the major kinds of food crops. Good level of detail to keep you successful without drowning you in facts and maybe's.

  • Tonia

While the book contained lovely sentiments, anti-GMO, seed preservation, etc it wasn't that well written and it didn't really contain that much useful info. It is worth a look and a quick read for all the photos. I only read it because I love their seed selection and what they represent.

  • Kathy

A good guide to responsible home gardening. I particularly like its plant by plant guide to growing, seed saving and harvesting. I got this from my library after receiving their beautiful seed catalogue so taken with It that I plan to buy it to use as a reference book.

  • Andrea

Great book to get you through those long days of winter when you can't garden. It gave good instructions on seed saving and organic gardening. I would recommend this book to all beginning gardeners.

  • Celest

Love this book. It is well organized, full of great tips and photos, and fun to read. My only complaint is that there are not many photos of entire garden plants, mostly only photos of the harvested portions.

  • Lyra

Nice book by the folks at Bakers Creek seed company about the whys and hows of gardening organically with heirloom crops. They are a great company, with an amazing selection of seeds, and this book offers alot of good information about growing them.

  • Jim
