Gay and lesbian political activist groups and the so called Christian right have spent much of the past thirty years in direct conflict with one another, and in so doing often helped to define one another s political identities and set one another s agendas In spite of this, however, very few scholars of either the Christian right or of gay and lesbian political mobilizatGay and lesbian political activist groups and the so called Christian right have spent much of the past thirty years in direct conflict with one another, and in so doing often helped to define one another s political identities and set one another s agendas In spite of this, however, very few scholars of either the Christian right or of gay and lesbian political mobilization have specifically examined the two groups interactions with each other This is particularly the case in histories of either group as a political entity This interdisciplinary historical study bridges the gap, weaving together these two strands of American political, religious, and sexual history Using a hybrid of historical and rhetorical analysis, I examine the recorded rhetoric of gay and lesbian activist organizations and Christian right organizations from the 1980s and early 1990s, and identify the structures each has built to define, dismiss, and vilify the other This time period is my focus because it encompasses the most critical years of the HIV AIDS epidemic among gay men in the United States HIV AIDS has come to occupy a particularly vital position in the rhetoric of both these political groups about one another, and was a major concern for gay and lesbian political activism during the most defining moments of its conflict with the Christian right Finally, I show that the divisions between politically conservative Christians and gay and lesbian activists are not so sharp as each s rhetoric has indicated, by examining the language of authors and activists who are both gay and theologically conservative Christians Their rhetorical constructions of themselves are also a vital component of this debate, and show the effects it has had on those caught in the middle.
